A simile is a figure of speech comparing two unlike things, often introduced with the words "like", "as", or "than". An example: "your beard looks like you pasted a beaver pelt on your face and then hacked at it with a machete". The simile does not infer that the items are exactly alike (clearly the person's beard is not actually a beaver pelt, unless that person is a crazy, homeless person), but that the items have some trait in common.
