The tonada is a traditional folk music genre made up of melodies and lyrical singing. It’s known for not being danced to and for placing strong emphasis on the lyrics. It originated in the northern Spanish regions of Asturias and Cantabria, where it gave rise to the distinct styles of the Asturian tonada and the Montañesa tonada.
