To hell with labelling, who cares about categorizing it? What's really important - the album is brilliant, there's not a single boring second on it!

rashomon can't really be classified as a black metal album, maybe prog-black by some stretch, but there's definitely some songs on it that are absolutely classifiable as black metal. anyhow categorizing it is stupid, it's a great album nonetheless

As a huge Trivium fan, I've been hoping that they did something a little more dynamic for a while, or experimented with different instrumentations. This project totally scratched that itch for me. I'm not totally familiar with black metal, but I understand the disappointment that this doesn't particularly sound very black metal, however I do think the album is great within its own right - definitely still a great metal sounding album!

This is definitely true. I think I would like this project if it wasn't relentlessly advertised as black metal by everyone, including Matt. I guess this is not bad, but didn't meet my expectations at all. Disappointing

I don't recall everything Heafy himself said in interviews about this album, only that he basically tried to strip the "black metal" features of everything extreme and elitist on this record. I think, this black metal affiliation mainly stems from the collaborations with Nergal and Ihsahn. I mean... Devin Townsend also once did a song with Ihsahn, never with the intention to do anything black-metalish. Apart from that, I second your opinion. Take the album for what it is, without the hype and labelling bullshit - it's METAL after all.

I've read some of his interviews and he pretty much sounds like if he invented a new genre of black metal or developed a new way of thinking what black metal is. In his mind this band is the new Alcest or something. He talked about breaking the elitism in the genre by bringing Gerard Way, but the funny thing is the "blackest" metal from the album definitely comes from him lol Overall I think he's very disconnected from the genre itself, most things he says and does has already been done countless times in the past, all of them sounding like black metal

If enough people submit around the same time then they change it pretty fast, if less people submit it takes them a while though
