I mean we can talk abouit it, I don't really feel the need for weed, so I don't know what to say, I take psych meds, so for me it shouldn't be combined, I did try LSD once that's about it, and drugs in general, I tried also a speedball Ritalinn, DHC and xanax, when you combine upper and a downer drug, you have a speedball, someone explained that to me, and it just gives you more energy, there is not much to it, I guess it's fun LSD was fun, it's a way to escape the boredom, I just wish I could function completely without drugs, but that's a tall order.

What is your roots metal subgenre or which are your alltime favorites? I started with heavy metal and I’ve rebounded to it lately.
Actions

Eleven-The-End
Hard question, I mean I first got into heavy metal through the bands that helped create the heavy metal genre, late 60s 70s bands such as The Who, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, etc. Also my profile here is a good indicator, the most played bands are my favorite, which in metal is Virgin Steele (power epic metal, wish some other subgenres tossed in there probably my all time favorite metal band), W.A.S.P. also one of my favorite bands, which started off as ''hair metal'' but really short lived, and their music is just classic heavy metal, and then I like quite a bit of prog metal, so these are my go-to, but in the recent years I've dabbled into the heavier subgenres as well such as death / black/ thrash metal, but I wouldn't say those are my go-to.

The Who was my first ever band but I consider Black Sabbath my introduction to metal music. Candlemass became my favorite metal band. I have listened to a lot of black metal in the past years but it’s not a genre I care to revisit anymore.
Actions
-
Eleven-The-End
Interesting, because The Who was my first ever introduction to Hard Rock music, and they definitely were one of the bands in the 60s that helped define heavy metal, a long time ago in 2004 is where I first bought some The Who CDs. Still like them to this day. Yeah fair, I guess for me it would be Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, and then Iron Maiden, if some of these do not count as heavy metal yet.

With Black Metal I go back to my all time favorites sometimes (Bathory first 4 albums, Emperor In the Nightside Eclipse, and Dissection albums) mostly these.

I listened to a lot of Iron Maiden and Metallica years ago but I don’t come back to them too often anymore. Iron Maiden’s debut and 2006 album are probably still some of my alltime favorite metal albums though. There’s a lot of sentimental value. When I decided it was time for me to return to roots last fall, I uncovered and listened so many bands I either didn’t know or didn’t bother listening to such as Manilla Road, Pagan Altar and Blue Öyster Cult. Now I have to make time to listen to and enjoy all the new bands and cut down on listening to some of my favorites.
Actions

Eleven-The-End
I listened to Manilla Road it's pretty good, but I'm not a fan of the vocals. Blue Oyster Cult have one of the greatest albums Secret Treaties, that are also one of the greatest metal records. I should check out Pagan Altar, never heard them yet.

I like finding out these more underground metal bands.. On that note I'd point you to Virgin Steele - they get compared to Manilla Road sometimes, but they are much better in my opinion, at least the vocalist is one of the best singers that has ever lived, I'd highly recommend checking out that band.

My youngest daughter has once again rummaged through my record collection and stumbled upon the "Live Shit" box set by Metallica. I myself haven't seen it in many years. Holy fuck, what an unbelievable live band Metallica was back then! The set includes, among other things, 2 DVDs with concerts from 1989 (Seattle) and 1992 (San Diego), showing Metallica in the form of their lives. Especially Lars leaves nothing but scorched earth. The band plows, especially during the Seattle concert, with such intensity through an absolute killer set that it quickly becomes clear why Metallica were the biggest band in the world three years later. Especially "Blackened" and "Creeping Death" were hammered with such brutality that even death metal fans will be thrilled. And Jason had the energy of a neutron bomb back then and often headbanged like a maniac. Go to your trusted torrent provider (or YT) and do your worst. A little teaser: https://youtu.be/WehVHuT9zik

the band I'm listening to right now ''Nile'' I can tolerate the brutality of it, because they are very technical, so I'm giving them another listen, and it's actually pretty good, but that's about as far as I'd go with ''brutal death metal''.. At least it's more interesting than cannibal corpse.

I would just start chronologically from the first album, the Deicide debut is actually considered their best, but most fans will say it's one of the their first 4 albums as their favorite from what I've seen with people online. Also, I never asked you this, but why do you have your shoutbox disabled? Joseph, thank You so much for Your Deicide recommendations, hope to get to it really soon, although I remember I promised You to do Exorcist first)) Deicide started later than the other dm masters but I still can recall how good they were accepted back then in the 90s, all of my friends (even girls) who were into death metal were so enthusiastic about them although that Benton's cross was kind of weird or something. I was in love with Chuck, Quorthon, Dan Swanö so they were enough for me, perhaps it will work now with some other good old bands:)) ah the shoutbox, no no the throlls can do what they want, who's afraid of them on this super mega friendly site?)) it's just because I use it for my personal notes during the day for I spend almost all the time near the pc for work, I can just put some of my thoughts or observations down and then I use it for myself. Yeah, I mean Deicide in the 90s, I hear from people were bigger than Death, from people going to concerts in the 90s, they say more people went to Deicide shows than to Death shows. Of course probably not as big as Cannibal Corpse, that's indeed the biggest death metal band, but I always preferred Deicide to CC, for me definitely Deicide have more meaningful lyrics than CC. It's still pretty unique that girls like death metal, I find that to be pretty rare.. lol mostly guys. But there are exceptions of course. :)

Eleven-The-End
Oh ok, gotcha. I understand about the shoutbox thing for your personal notes. And yeah I also love Chuck and Dan Swano are some of my favorite death metal vocalist, and for me also Mikael Akerfledt from Opeth and other bands, and also Jeff Becerra from Possessed, just because I personally believe he was the first to really do the death growl, I know there is like an ongoing debate if Kam Lee, or Chuck with the first Mantas / Death demos or Possessed demos who were the first back around 1983-1984, but as far as a studio album, it is very clear that Seven Churches from 1985 was the first death metal studio release, I don't think many would disagree, although some say it was thrash metal, the argument is that the riffs are thrash metal, but vocals are death metal, for me that's splitting hair, Seven Churches was way more aggressive than thrash metal in the mid 80s. so yea

Thanks Dyl. The meaning is a bit complicated, because I've had a lot of significant things connected to the number Eleven in my life, most notably my near death experience, but the name itself is from the song ''Beyond the Horizon'' from the black metal band Dissection, the lyrics ''Eleven shall bring the End'' are at the end of the song. This is more of a recent discovery, my primary song that has lyrics about that is ''Jimmy'' from Tool.

Burzum, I don't really know which one is my favorite, I actually prefer his Ambient stuff than his black metal. But I think the album ''From The Depths Of Darkness'' is great, it's re-recording of his black metal songs from the first 2 albums, and I think his vocals have improved on this re-recording, I personally like it the most from his black metal stuff. Also Mayhem is worth checking out, ''Deathcrush'' EP from 1987 and their first album from 1994. Then also I.N.R.I. (1987) from Sarcofago, that's a Brazilian black metal album that is really awesome, I think it's one of the best. I really love the early stuff, so even the Sepultura early stuff was black metal (Morbid Visions, Bestial Devastation), and early Sodom and Kreator from the German bands their first albums were also more black metal sounding.

thank you so much!! keeping note of this, which i'll get to very soon! i also forgot to mention impaled nazarene, i think they started off as black metal? although their more recent sound is extreme metal i guess. i'm not even sure what classifies a song as "black", since i'm so new to this, but i would think it's somehow related to thrash because i definitely hear some thrashy influences in many of these songs from these bm bands. but yes im looking forward to trying those bands and will lyk what i think when i get to them!!

Yes, I mean take for example Sepultura, their first 2 albums were black metal, and then in the late 80s they became thrash metal sounding, same with also Sodom and Kreator, both of their first albums were more like black / or even death metal, and later on they also played Thrash metal. I also consider Slayer as Black Metal (definitely Show No Mercy (1983) and Hell Awaits, to me those are black metal albums, so technically they would be the first, although the classic black metal vocals as the black metal shrieks and screams were probably first heard in Bathory's debut album from 1984. Basically Bathory's first 4 albums in the 80s Every black metal band in the 90s were inspired by Bathory, so Bathory are definitely the most influential in black metal scene. impaled nazarene I only know a few songs that I had on some compilation.

But that one I sent to a friend of mine in Louisiana USA, because Motorhead is a band that I only like a few songs... I'd buy Bathory or like Virgin Steele shirt of course, but they only had like the popular bands, no black metal stuff.. but yea Led Zeppelin I used to have a t-shirt but that was when I was 14 years old, so it's good that now I have a Led Zeppelin t-shirt again. :)

Let me know if You see something interesting! I actually have two identical Shadow Gallery t-shirts which I bought in autumn 2010 when they came for some gigs in Europe, it was amazing to see them on stage three times and we also had an opportunity to talk to Gary and Carl a bit, they were so nice and friendly!!!

oh wow! I didn't know you saw Shadow Gallery live. I heard they toured around that time, however I only found out about their music in 2012, at which point they were not touring anymore, or at least I don't think so, also from what I heard they mostly went to places like Greece, or Italy.. But yea it's not the same without Mike Baker, I think the Digital Ghost was a good album, but perhaps this is over with making new music with them now. And that's cool, they have some of the best albums ever made in prog rock / metal music, I cosnider Room V to be the best prog metal album of all time, I think that the album is literally perfect, and I love all their albums, but if I had to pick just one it would be Room V.

Gary did some work for the band Ayreon as well, in the album Universal Migrator part 2, he did both keyboard and guitar solos in the track ''Through the wormhole''. He is a great musician, and a few years ago they did a Facebook live stream, talking about Mike Baker and just about their music, I think it was the anniversary of the album 'Tyranny'' and I kind of surprised Gary and Brendt Allman that I knew some stuff, like the end of the song ghost of a chance has ALASKA guitar chords in it, or some other things, I was really obsessed with their music hehehe

I think it might have been a song they recorded during the making of the album ''Marriage of Heaven and Hell part 2'' because in the song ''Strawgirl'' on that album on line is ''Did you come to see Jesus, do you walk with God?'' But that song ''Do You Walk with God'' was released as a bonus track on the re-issue of Invictus, entitled ''Fire Spirits'' that one has a lot of their older songs, and even new ones up till The House of Atreus acoustic versions, and this song was a bonus track, it's not on any other album, only as a bonus track on Fire Spirits (2014 CD2 re-issue of Invictus)

But interesting you said August last year - in that month I was not scrobbling music to last.fm much because I was 24 days in the hospital, so it was probably late August, I listened to Virgin Steele almost every day when I was confined in the hospital last year.. :) One thing that made me happy was music in there, I would even sing along to VS's Victory is Mine, the last high note ascending, and I sang it loud, so the nurse heard me and complained.. LOL but it was worth it, I thought singing is very healthy, but yea I understand that the nurses don't want to hear loud singing or the other patients, but I wanted to do that high note. lol Virgin Steele or other band I sometimes just walk outside, even today listening to The Ocean from Led Zeppelin and I just sing along, I don't really care if other people hear me, I just sing along the music when I feel in a good mood (which is not every day) so yeah. :)

Yes, it was late August, I remember I checked this! I love singing along, although my voice isn't strong at all (so I don't usually bother anyone:)) but thankfully I hear music very well... Your voice is fantastic, I heard You singing! Keep going!

lol he sure is. There are a lot of albums, in terms of bonus material, like the Invictus bonus CD was called ''Fire Spirits'' and it has many songs from Marriage of Heaven and Hell albums, Invictus, and some from the House of Atreus, and it's like acoustic unplugged, his vocals are really amazing on there. And he is an absolute savage on Exorcist album, the vocals are pretty demonic, that proves how he was versatile, not just a Rob Halford like Power Metal singing, but also demonic growls as in death and Black metal, he could do it all :)

Eleven-The-End
Well Exorcist was around the time of the release of Virgin Steele's 3rd album ''Noble Savage'', Dave DeFeis had some legal matters with Jack Starr the original guitarist of VS, and in the end he got to keep the name virgin steele, but from my understanding they did not have enough money for production of the next album, that is why Dave DeFeis made all these projects in 1985. (He wrote 3 albums at that time 1. Exorcist: Nightmare Theatre 2. Original Sin - Sin Will Find You Out [Original had Dave DeFeis' sister on vocals] and Piledriver - Stay Ugly. Many of these songs were re-recorded by virgin steele, and both Original Sin and Exorcist had all fake names, and fake people, it was all done by basically Dave DeFeis and Ed from Virgin Steele, not sure about the rest but definitely it was them releasing it under fake names. And despite Exorcist being an underground heavy metal cult classic, Dave preferred the style in virgin steele, that's why it is the only album like that.

I don't dislike it, but I don't mind it either. Nothing I would actively seek though. Even I began to prefer old school DM over most other forms of extreme metal later during that phase of my life, but technical/ progressive DM was equally entertaining to me; not restricting that style to only extreme metal though. I now mostly seek stuff that would be closer to what you call traditional music, like art rock/ metal sorts. I like all of it but right now that's what I find myself into more than anything else; progressive is best right now for me.

Yeah, progressive rock / metal has always been my main favorite genre. Opeth and Edge of Sanity in the 90s were the most innovative with combining death metal with progressive rock. I know other bands like Atheist, or the band Pestilence, and also Cynic and Death, but these were all less complex then what Opeth and Edge of Sanity came up with around 1995 (Opeth's first 3 albums) mainly, and Edge of Sanity's Crimson and The Spectral Sorrows.

Eleven-The-End
Pestilence was a dutch progressive death / thrash metal, so on the technical side they were really amazing. But I meant like Opeth combining not just jazz and death metal like Cynic or Atheist, they combined other elements into the music, so for me those are better. But I do love the stuff all these bands did.

Yup I've heard all those bands and they're all awesome but I'm not really in extreme metal mood these days. But I do listen to songs I like every now and then from that style. I intend to listen to the new prog rock Opeth albums soon and more often. They've got good reviews and ratings.

Any song in particular on my channel that you liked the most? I'd like to know which one you liked the most from those you checked out, bro. The last song I really made was in 2021 the ''Loch Morlich Tribute'' I called it, so it's been quite a while since I made new original music. (Well I did make the Night at the Asylum, and there's that Interloper Blues, but that stuff is like a blues practice stuff I used to play back in around 2007 that my guitar teacher taught me, at least most of the song, the rest I kinda improvised. But yea mostly the last years I didn't really compose new music and if I did it was instrumental. the songs from like 2015-2019 some of them have lyrics and vocals.

Thank You for the comment and for such a precious recommendation! I've decided to reply in Your shoutbox to stay in contact more often perhaps:) I adore Khan, that's right I know him much better in Conception but I really love Kamelot's Karma and Epica, I even saw him once in a gig with Kamelot in Germany! But then I stopped following the band somehow - there's so much good music in the world (( For me it's very important to have good people around with similiar taste to be able to share thoughts and emotions! Yes, Bathory and Virgin S have been ones of my favourite bands for ages! How did You start listening metal music or rock?

Yeah Karma is one of my favorite albums from them, the song ''Across the Highlands'' is just so awesome, love the lyrics and the melodies and all that. but Fourth Legacy, and Siege Perilous (the 3rd and 4th albums) are also great, Khan joined the band on the third album, though the first 2 albums are worth checking as well, the singer is also decent, and some great guitar work on the first 2 albums also. I like a lot of prog/power metal, so Kamelot used to be my favorite, I noticed we have a lot more in common, bands like Shadow Gallery (not many people even know about this band) they're really underrated, same with Virgin Steele, criminally underrated bands. Yea I also kind of stopped following Kamelot when Khan left the band, I only heard the album ''Haven'' which was like 2015, and it wasn't as good as with Khan on vocals. And yes I agree about that it's great to talk with people who are into similar music, I'll answer about my start with Rock and Metal music in my next comment

It's a long story, but I'll just say what got me into Rock music, and changed my life too. First time hearing stairway to Heaven from Led Zeppelin, I was blown away, this was around 2002 when I was 13, we were in Austrian alps skiing / snowboarding with family and friends. And my dad's friend had a mixtape CD and stairway to heaven in it, I took the CD and played it on my headphones in my room, I played stairway to heaven on repeat like 30 times before I fell asleep. lol I loved it so much. So after that my dad bought me some Led Zeppelin CDs and DVDs, but really I started researching on the internet, I wanted to find similar stuff, so I'd get into the 70s rock / prog rock music, The Doors, The Who, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Rush, and so on. Also prog rock Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Camel, Caravan, many others. It wasn't until I was like 17 that I got more into the heavy metal stuff Iron Maiden might have been what got me into the metal stuff, and Tool.

Also as far as like extreme metal, I'd have to say like death and black metal, Opeth got me into extreme metal music, and are still one of my favorite bands ever. With black metal, Immortal and Bathory really got me into that genre, and Dissection ''Storm of the Light's Bane'' that album was definitely like the one that got me into exploring more black metal. But then I heard Blood Fire Death, and that album for me is the best black metal album of all time.

Well that is true that Mike's voice is not in Crimson part 1, however the acoustic guitar solo that is Mikael on the guitar in part 1, I recognise his guitar style, and Crimson part 2 actually has Mikael vocals starting with 0:25 - 0:52. In fact Mikael's vocals are also in Crimson part 4 (0:05 -0:36) then Crimson part 6 (0:04 - 1:00) and (5:02 - 5:55) and in Crimson part 7 the long scream starting at 1:10 - 1:26 that is Mikael scream. the Unholy ''GOD'', the God scream is Miakel. Mikael also plays some guitar solos, I am not sure if all the guitar solos, I know some of the guitar solos I recognise it is Mikael's style, the lead guitar, the harmonic guitar solos is Dan Swano..

Ah ok. Thanks man, yeah I have a pretty diverse taste in music. But my go-to music is classic / hard rock Metal- most sub-genres, prog rock, and electronic / ambient. As for Mariah, the main reason why I got obsessed with her music is because her insane vocal range, she has the largest vocal range of all female singers, and I love high notes, so as soon as I found out that Mariah has hit the highest note (Mostly because I love high notes in Heavy metal / Rock music) I was like fuck yeah, let's hear it. And I was instantly hooked, her whistle high notes are just something not of this world, it's absolutely mindblowing. Is she as good as the bands I named, hard question, because in her case we are mostly talking about the vocals, but I'll say this her 90s albums had very good music, some famous guitarists were on her 90s albums, that you might know from other bands, so I would definitely recommend listening to her, my favorite is her debut album, ''Emotions'', ''Butterfly'', and Daydream

Yeah I know, mostly people just say Oh yea she has that Christmas song, and I know all the memes lol, but for real she is really talented, and as I said her 90's music is 100% worth checking out, maybe you'll like it. On her first 2 albums she has also songs that varies in genres, some Soul / Gospel type songs, Pop rock songs, blues song (If It's Over on Emotions album) and Jazz - one of the most beautiful songs called ''The Wind'' also on Emotions, and also a song with Amazing piano on her debut album called ''Vanishing'', in that song she hits one of her highest notes (C#7) Anyway, if you check out her music, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Also from her 2000's the album ''The Emancipation of Mimi'' was like her comeback album it's also pretty good, but yea first check her 90s stuff. Also I am into technical Thrash and Death metal, stuff like Coroner, Pestilence, Death, or Opeth, but they are progressive death metal, which is probably my most favorite band.

I'll try to check out her music soon bro, can't really promise about that really being soon though. I like female solo singer/songwriters a lot myself like PJ Harvey, Lana Del Rey, and I've heard a lot of them in the early days of my musical journey; they're not very similar to each other but variety/ variance is always good to have. I'm into those metal bands a lot also, although Death and Coroner aren't anymore and Opeth have changed their style so much that I don't feel the same for them as I used to; genre-defining stuff though all of them.

That's ok. And I understand, not a lot of bands come to India. As far Asia, mostly the bands go to Japan if they're doing world tour, I know maybe like the Philippines, it has some metal fan base there, so some metal bands do come there, but yea not as much as Europe, or the Americas. And I agree, it's not a big deal that I can't see some bands live, I would love to see some of the great bands of the 70s or 80s that just don't play now anymore, but it's fine, you can watch like a concert on youtube, or there are DVDs of concerts etc.

I heard that Kashmir from Led Zeppelin was inspired by Robert Plant's visit to Morocco, even though Kashmir is a place in India, but the song does have the oriental vibe and epic.. Just a little trivia, I know a lot about led zeppelin, saw documentaries and read a book about them as well.
