Hey you! Hello, it's been a very long time. So far, I haven't been listening much to new music yet, I am usually busy lately, so almost no time to check out new albums. Still had time to listen to the new Enslaved a few times, it's a pretty good release from them, more interesting and coherent then E and Utgard. Also enjoying a lot the new Carcariass! What a unique band! I've always loved their records, it's sounding so peaceful, catchy, melodic yet quite technical and can be ferocious at times. A strange mix of sound and vibe that stays easily memorable. Then, the new Sortilège, that came as surprise, since I discovered they were about to release a new album after over 30 years the day before the album was about to get out! This album is solid, it sounds like them after all those years, with that voice almost intact, which is so expressive and powerful!

I'll curiously check these out! Mind you, I've listened to the new Enslaved a bit. My reception was mixed; I'm not opposed to the progressive Enslaved, which I enjoyed on Ruun or Isa, but Heimdal is challenging. My favorite so far has been an album called "Supraliminal" by the band Nothingness. It's quite dissonant death metal with a really nice guitar sound and drumming skill.

Yeah, the new Enslaved definitely requires multiple spins before appreciating it. There is another band I would like to recommand you, Winterhorde, with the album Maestro, its a masterpiece, a truly beautiful record that I can easily listen again and again without ever getting enough of it. It's passionate, intense and vivid all along. And yeah, I will give a listen to Nothingness, I enjoy dissonant death metal for sure.

Hi! I've listened to the new Voivod release, I think it was good. I'm not sure how much I will listen to this particular album, but it has nicely reminded me of Voivod in general, and I will likely check out their output from the late 80's and early 90's (thinking Killing Technology, Dimension Hatröss, The Outer Limits). Nothingface will be more of a challenge as I scrobble from Spotify, but I'm sure I can find that somewhere at least.

Ah yeah, it's a good release for sure, but I think Voïvod is the kind of band that require multple listens to really appreciate any of their albums, but still its hard to surprise anyone now after so many insane records. They made their reputation and trademark style out of the first era from War and Pain to Nothingface, perhaps even Angel Rat which I love too. This band was so distinct and new at the time. A sort of Ovni band that was doing their unique and unreal metal sound, and their albums still resonate fresh till this day which is even more admirable.

Greetings friend! It's been a while since we've spoken. I wanted to ask you if you've ever listened to Grave Miasma. They're hard to describe or compare to any band I know, they play a very dark, dense and dissonant type of death metal. Their 2013 album titled "Odori Sepulcrorum" is fantastic in my opinion. Give them a listen if you haven't!

Oh hi, and sorry for the late response, I am not looking at last.fm much anymore. And yes, I have listened to them before, it's a pretty good album indeed. You describe it well, its quite dark, dense and almost cavernous with that echoing effect, yet you can still easily understand what they are doing (which is important to me). Also, they are about to release a new album the next month. It sounds like they took their time to craft their art. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzjidD9NptM

I'm not very good at forming complex descriptions of my opinions. But I do want to say this - Amassefer was incredible. Their album, it seemed, took me to an entirely different place somewhere in my mind, filled to the brim with colour. Definitely a record to come back to.

Yes, I understand you. It's not always easy to describe what you listen or feel, with time, after listening to a certain among of music or anything else, your brain creates connection between what you listen and all sort of things and it become easier then to talk about it. Some things may be more complex, so complicated to assimilate. Anyways, I'm happy to see that you loved it, that album to me is like a movie, with a whole story to it, it feels like a long journey. That album, I always come back to it at anytime.

I'm listening to Hollenthon right now and I wanted to share a few initial thoughts. I was not entirely sure what to expect, as you had referred to Black Seeds of Vengeance, and that is a record I have not listened to thus far. I will, however, if I do not forget, listen to Nile tomorrow. As for Hollenthon, I am very glad you shared it. There is something about this music that to me is reminiscent of both Orphaned Land (if you have not listened to them, I recommend) but also of computer role-playing games from late 1990s/early 2000s, and both these things I remember very fondly. Thank you once again!

Oh great!! I'm so glad you liked it. I think its not a band for everyone since its quite unique. There are so much going on in their songs along with so many influences incorporated into it, sometimes its close to what Dimmu Borgir was doing with their album Puritanical (Lord of Bedlam) , and then it turns into that strange gothic/industrial feel, or add symphonic elements that reminds me Therion. Also, I was reffering to Black Seeds of Vengeance only for its cover which has a similar looking, the same colors with that snake around, and its from the same era, but the music from Nile is way different, much more brutal. I know very well Orphaned Land, such an amazing band, I truly love everything they put out, especially Mabool, ORwarriOR and the last one. Another band that has this incredible music along with the ancient oriental sound is Amaseffer with their (unfortunately) only album Slaves for Life, it's absolutely gorgeous and epic, I conjure you to give a listen to this monument.

Your taste in metal does not cease to amaze me. Thought I'd let you know, haha. I'm kind of getting more into early death metal than I ever have before, gotta say it's quite a journey. I also find myself enjoying a fair bit of classical music, though not as much into the classical period per se, but rather baroque, where the instrumentation is vastly different and appeals to me far more. Either way it is good to know I'm not the only metal fan who is also inclined towards some truly 'older' music!

Thank you for this praise, it is well appreciated. And so much the better if you're more interested in the beginnings of death metal, certainly a bit less technical and brutal than today's bands, but you can find bands and albums of incredible depth and intensity, and having a very singular identity. And I think it's always important to open your mind to different musical genres, and it helps you to understand music as a whole. It's always good to vary the pleasures. I have always loved classical music since I was very young. Starting with the classical era of Mozart and the beginnings of the romantic era with Beethoven, who are my two favorite composers, I like to think that I balance between music of the bright and dark side, although the classical music also has its own lots of dark and epic pieces.

I listened to 8/10 songs off Xentrix's Bury the Pain. I was listening to the last two or three songs as I wrote this shout. It's an okay album to me. I'm not so crazy about the vocals on it, tbh. The vocalist's vocals are a bit similar to Chuck Billy's current vocal style. I don't like Chuck Billy's current vocal style at all. I'm not a big fan of Testament, except for the first demo they did as "Legacy", The Legacy full-length album and a re-recording of Into the Pit. I remember years ago I did some discography run (listening to them from the first album to whatever their last album was)... I was totally bored by Testament and I really wanted to get into them (especially The New Order album), but sadly couldn't get into them more. The instrumentation off Bury the Pain is really really good. There's some amazing guitar work going on (The One You Fear has the best guitar work, IMO) and great drumming as well. If the vocals were different, I'd might like the album a bit more.

Yes, I agree, the singer's voice is very similar to Chuck Bill's, which can be surprising. However, it must be recognized, Xentrix has always been very influenced by Testament. And even in the old days, the similarities were numerous. So yes, the album is pretty good, the riffs and solos are well put together, but as always, Xentrix shows that it does not really have its own identity, and it remains what it has always been, a good and efficient band, but never at the forefront. As for Testament, I hang on to the first three albums that I conceive as excellent thrash albums of the late 80s. Each of these albums have lots of powerful and catchy songs, but I can understand that the voice can put off some people.

I remember you recommending me Krisiun's Apocalyptic Revelation and AssassiNation. I thought AssassiNation was the better of the two. However, I find Works of Carnage to be better than those two. That's my favorite full-length album by Krisiun, so far. I haven't checked out The Great Execution and Conquerors of Armageddon yet. My favorite Krisiun release overall is their EP Unmerciful Order. Oh and I haven't gotten around to listening to Xentrix's newest album. I only listened to that one song you posted on my shoutbox.

Yes, I agree, Assassination is the superior one. It's the perfect Krisiun outlet where the songwritting, the sumptuously technicality, the speed and aggression are orchestrated to the nearest millimeter. The strike force of the brazilians is well established, but Assassination masterfully pushes the nail, starting on a Bloodcraft whose beginning is strongly reminiscent of Deicide. Works of Carnage is a good one too, catching up brilliantly the blunder of the previous one. However, I personnally lose interest in its second half with those pointless instrumental and by the venom cover that I would say is pure filler. The Great Execution is not bad album, there are a bunch of good songs on it, and I think you would really like this one, but for me it's rather a too long and overall it feels like they are at cruising speed compared to their old material. Conquerors on the other hand is particularly devastating, a whirlwind of pure energy and hate, but I feel some linearity all along here.

Oh that's an awesome pick. Sulphur Aeon did it again, the new album is definitely very good. Although, I am still processing it in my mind, and I don't know how much I like it yet. And you know, 2018 has been a very busy year for Metal, all sorts of big releases nonstops... For myself, I had a hard time choosing which albums are my favorites. But I think the best way to consider your best albums, it's the ones who you listened the most. So in a top 5, I'll go for Arkona 1st, Orphaned Land 2nd, Portal 3rd, Aborded 4th and Alkaloid 5th. Also honorable mention for Beyond Creation, Flesh Consumed, Monstrosity, Hate Eternal, High on Fire, Drawn and Quartered, Rivers of Nihil, Krisiun, Obscura, Bloodbath, Ultha, and probably many others that I forget by now... And it's funny that my picks are mostly all have been released early this year, that proves how much they amazed me.

In fact, I've been listening to their other albums in the past, which I think Downfall Rising is their best overall. For me, I see Wombbath as umpteenth Swedish band with good qualities, they are doing fine death metal, but I find they lack personality, they have nothing that really standout to me, no originality. The last album isn't much different, it's pleasant without being really indispensable or essential.

Oh, I was aware of that release since months ago, It just took more time for me to really dig into it. Now that it's done, I really like it. They built up a great conceptual album around Hitchcock's work. Spellbound has a little more sinister vibe to it compared to the other albums, which please me a lot, even if the Sadist's trademark has not changed that much. The keyboards and other intruments are still very predominant in this band. These Italians are not those who occupy center stage and monopolize the media success. No, they are rather the perfect example of the creativity, imagination and artistic talent that one encounters over the course of musical explorations in the exciting world of metal music.

I'm more into black metal bands lately, I guess it fits with how I feel. Also, there are so many bands and albums to listen to, so many great bands released something over the last month. I'm trying to listen to everything from the new Aborted/Monstrosity/Deicide to the new Behemoth/Beyond Creation, and now Bloodbath... I haven't listened yet to Upon Desolated Sands by Hate Eternal except from the singles. There is also Gorod with it's new album, a band I truly enjoy. Anyway, I promise I will listen to Arkaik anytime soon.

Oh I did listened to them this year, but only with my mp3. I remember while being in Cuba in march, I was listening to Earthborn Evolution in loop. I am french canadian, so Beyond Creation is a local band. I know them since they released The Aura in 2011. I haven't listened to the new album yet, except one of the single, The Inversion, and it's been long time ago, so I can't remember much. All I can say for now, it's that it seems to me they are going into a more progressive direction than the previous works. Also, this is the first album without the famous bassist Dominic Lapointe, so I'm quite curious about the result.

Impureza is awesome! Thank you for that recommendation. I'll scrobble them at some point in time. They are unique and I like that a lot. Different from many bands I listen to. A band from France that has Spanish lyrics, that's quite something! I would never think of that. It doesn't surprise me since France and Spain are Mediterranean countries. Both languages are Romance languages. You'd think a band from France would have lyrics in France, but they throw a curveball and they have their lyrics in Spanish. It's quite impressive.

Yes, they are living in France, but they are hispanic. If you look at the names of the crew, it's nothing french. And like you said, this band is very unique. I've been amazed back then by their Ep from 2013. The feeling is masterful, this guttural singing in Spanish, these flamenco guitars and taps so welcome, coupling to perfection with a brutal death tremor of any moment. By looking a little further, we can find the riffing sometimes close enough to Nile, although the strong identity of Impureza is more than undeniable. I'm glad you enjoyed, long live this great band!

That is quite awesome! Would you also consider them technical death metal? I would say incorporating flamenco elements is something a technical death metal band would do.
Actions

WiseParanoia
Well, obviously their music has much technicality to it, even in the pure traditionnal flaminco sections, I suppose it must be pretty hard to play, but I wouldn't classified them in the technical death category such as Obscura, Beyond Creation or Archspire. Personnally, I would put them in the style of the early Nile albums with of course a different approach to their music.

There is a lot to say about Obscura and this new album. For me, this band is very easy to love, because it contains almost all the ingrediants that metal fans like, the brutality, the melodies, the virtuosity mixed with an unstoppable technicality, the riffs sometimes catchy and later complex, but having a certain feeling and then rather progressive songs. A great mixture of all the pioneers in the genre, such as Death, Atheist, Cynic, Pestilence, Morbid Angel, Necrophagist. I find that since Akroasis, the group has simplified its music to make it a little more accessible, but how effective with more dynamism. The band's music is now more vivid and brighter, I would even say hotter. Brighter for the incredible precision, power, and modernity of production; hotter for the pure emotions that shine behind the ruthless technical bulldozer deployed by the group.

Regarding Diluvium, I think it's a very good album and a logical continuation of the previous one. Steffen's vocals have improved a lot since then. Most songs are quite remarkable or even excellent, like the trio Stars / Emergent / Diluvium which I think is a very strong start. I particularly love Ethereal Skies which represents in my opinion the best of the album. Or, there is Seventh Aeon who hangs on me a lot with his varied riffs and solos and Steffen's vocals of tremendous intensity. Only Mortification and Epilogue to Infinity, which I find a little below the rest in terms of efficiency and inventiveness. Also, there are several places where I find that it lacks coherence in its way of progressing on the different parts of a song. The best example would be on Mortification of the Vulgar Sun, because despite interesting moments, all this clearly lacks organization and often it cuts drastically for something else. The magnificent intro on Convergence is also a good example of that.
Actions
-
WiseParanoia
I must also say that despite the small flaws here and there, I can only bow to such musical talent. Diluvium is a frank success whatever one may say. A little personal anecdote; by learning the concept surrounding the four albums, and knowing that the latter is supposed to evoke the end of existence and all things, the apocalypse, hence the dark colors of the cover. I was foolishly expecting something darker and more explosive, so a bit different. Anyway, it remains an admirable album.

Disco Volante is indeed a hard record to get into. I only have one friend who's gotten into it besides myself, but we like all kinds of weird stuff. It's an album whose weirdness really goes along well with weird movies, maybe something by David Lynch or Quentin Tarantino. Mr. Bungle's first album is the most fun I'd say, it's just got silly lyrics and the music is just as silly. Their third album "California" is still Bungle-like, but more structured and poppy. I'd say it's very easy-listened compared to their other works, though not as interesting because of that.
