I'm only just getting into jazz (so not an expert) but I'm enjoying his album a lot -- it's definitely compositionally interesting and more energetic than Mockroot. Seems he's leaning into the prog metal/djent angle, which I don't mind at all, though some might. I definitely think you should listen to it! Since you know Meshuggah you might have heard this already, but I recommend Joy in Motion by Animals as Leaders. There's a joint collab between Tosin & Tigran on The Call Within, to great results

You should start listening Candlemass with their debut, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Solitude or Demon's Gate tracks will do. Their latest full length is pure garbage.

Thank you for the recommendation, but I have to confess that I haven't got the attention span for a lot of doom metal acts, and just in general, for most metal conceived prior to 90s. My library here doesn't show it but I have listened to Candlemass before. EDM I didn't like, and although I though Nightfall was better, it ultimately wasn't my cup of tea. I did discover exciting new stuff through your rym reviews. Antimatter and Ahab especially, because I'd heard of both, but had procrastinated checking them out. Make sure to give Messa's Belfry a spin. Feast for Water was more polished and mature, but I think that, even though the lows were lower, the highs were also higher on Belfry.

Sad to hear that Candlemass did not appeal to you but I'm glad to see more common ground in other areas. Messa has been on my "to listen to" list for a while and finally gave it a spin. It was definitely a fresh air in doom metal, liked it a lot, specifically it's blues and jazz influences, they fit so well with the doom tune. Their debut lack this jazz influence and leans more on drone as far as I know but soon I will give it a spin too.

Well, in terms of Balkan music, I'm not too knowledgeable either, since most of the contemporary, mainstream stuff keeps taking ever worse turns imo, which is a shame because the authentic mix of eastern and western influences has a lot of potential. Maybe check out Senidah's album "Bez tebe". It's contemporary trappy r'n'b, dark, has Balkan vibes. It was recently released. Do you have any recommendations? I'll listen to just about any genre.

Hey, you left a shout ages ago about Joni & Kate, sorry I disabled my shoutbox and forgot some things I hadn't replied to, they still on your radar? I saw you've been into the new Hozier stuff too, it's good isn't it?! And I can't remember if I already said so, but your library is great. And I like it when music surprises me, too.

Oh, hi! Yes, both Joni and Kate are still on my radar, so any entry songs/albums you could recommend, I would appreciate. Hozier's new stuff is really cool, though I'm not sure what to make of Almost (Sweet Music) and Dinner&Diatribes. Maybe I need to give those two songs a few more spins. Let me know how the Massive Attack show was. Hopefully you had a good time.

It was really good, thank you! Odd that they didn't do an encore or have a support act, doors were at 5 and they weren't onstage until 8:45, there was definitely some opportunity for more music in there... but they were great of course, Liz Fraser sang as beautifully as ever. I wouldn't single out those Hozier tracks as favourites either so far really, but overall I really like his new songs. I'm surprised NFWMB isn't on the new album, it's a great one.

My answer about Kate and Joni has basically evolved into an essay so I'm gonna PM it to you. :)

:o Ok, that makes sense I suppose. I honestly love a lot of Gira's delivery, but I can understand how it would rub someone the wrong way. Good luck with the rest of the discography!

Well, Soundtracks for the Blind is my favorite of theirs, but it's probably not a great entry point, it's very subtle and long. Great Annihilator is my go to rec for new listeners, I'd recommend giving it another spin...or, here's a few choice cuts that have particularly impressed me and hopefully leave some impact on you... 1) The Seer Returns [The Seer], 2) Killing for Company [TGA], 3) New Mind [Children of God], 4) God Damn the Sun [Burning World], 5) I Was a Prisoner in Your Skull [Soundtracks], 6) Jim [My Father], 7) The Glowing Man [TGM], 8) Feel Happiness [Swans Are Dead], 9) We'll Fall Apart [World of Skin], 10) Lunacy [The Seer].
