Yes, you’re absolutely right about that! Thanks for the video :) very interesting universal visual and thematic parallels from completely different approaches. Nice! Love both of them (especially warmly Tarkovsky). I got the book - though I’m very busy nowadays -, hopefully I will immerse myself in it soon. Have a nice week(end)!

opa. hvala ti!

There seems to be an ambivalent attitude towards Dylan from many people. Lou Reed apparently said "Dylan is the type of person you'd want to punch out at a party," at some point but would later speak quite fondly of him. It may be people appreciated his music more than his personality. :/

Daa, jučer, bilo je divno. Oba koncerta ista (setlistom), a opet malo drugačija atmosferom.

Life, at the very least, is a more tangible concept than death. :) In all seriousness, it's been OK, i'm trying to enjoy spring as much as i can get between being stuck at work. I like your description of both shows, i enjoyed both but Mono were pretty special. The KVB surprised me by the depth of their sound live, considering the band only consists of two people. With what kind of expectations are you approaching Dylan? I've never went to see him live and most people i know seem to come out disappointed. To put it mildly. I recall the term "that fucking autist" thrown around. :)

You've made it (Third) sound very interesting, i'll definitely give it a try. I still have a lot of PJ to listen to as i haven't had much time to devote to new music lately. Greenaway is fairly unintelligible to me, but at the very least he's extremely painterly, which i always like in films. And, ofcourse, Nyman is almost always incredible. Anyway if you ever decide to see the film, there's an intro by Greenaway at the beginning that helps with the watching. ;)

Hey. I see you have taken quite a liking to the Captain. 1488 listens in a month must be some kind of record. ;) I noticed you listened to Michael Nyman briefly. I would gladly suggest his first ever score for a film, The Draughtsman's Contract, probably my favorite. The soundtrack to Man on Wire on the other hand is a sort of best of collection, sampled mostly from his collaborations with Greenaway and Vierny. Any suggestions on where i might start with Portishead? I only know them quite vaguely and you seem to be an expert on the matter. :)

Thanks, i haven't heard about it yet. Seems like an interesting experiment, although i have to admit the idea of a group of people lurking into the studio during the recording process like tourists visiting a zoo sounds rather uneasy. But i hope to lurk from the corner of the stage if she decides to visit some place close to our part of the world. ;)

Thanks, it does sound a bit like You and who's army? It also reminds me of Everything in it's right place, but i may just be tone deaf. :) I've just seen a live DVD from her Uh huh her tour, titled Please leave quietly, with some great performances. You may have already seen it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZm5aJ7GQkw . Hope she tours sometime soon, would love to see her live.

Btw, the third picture from the bottom, is that from Cries and Whispers? I think this one would have fit in nicely in the collage as well, the (second) reddest film i've ever seen: http://www.notcoming.com/images/reviews/l/cookthiefwifelover.jpg :)

Yes, escapism doesn't really come to mind. The River and No Girl So Sweet are especially gutwrenching to listen to. And it almost feels a bit voyeuristic reading the lyrics of the two albums, like examining the ashes of someone's love affair. Oh and in The Garden, the piano melody in the middle, does that remind you of a Radiohead song? I can't put my finger on where i heard it. I'm sure you know them more than i do. :)

Hey. Hope you had a pleasant new year's eve. :) I was reading a couple of lyrics from ITD? and i just noticed the excerpt of one of them is on top of your tumblr. You were right, i think 'raw' is a perfect word. There's a lot of pain in the album and it's great to hear it handled directly and honestly. I think it's interesting that both her and Nick probably produced their best work after their break up (at least in my opinion – and i don't know all of Polly's work). Also, i was listening to TBYML last night, half asleep already, and i suddenly realized another song sounded just like some Beefheart tune. Unfortunately it was I Think I'm A Mother, which you already mentioned. :/ But at least i can honestly say i would have realized one of the references. :)

And yes, really enjoying Is This Desire? and looking forward to discovering PJ further. It's kind of embarrassing it has taken me so long, i mean, i still have the videotape of the videos from her first album i taped when they were new. :/ Will try TBYML next. Anyway, all the best in the new year. :)

Glad to hear you are enjoying Beefheart and that your vinyl collection is growing. :) What was the first one, if it's not a secret? And thanks for the song connections, i probably wouldn't have noticed them. If you're interested there are a couple of good documentaries on him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBa8bS_vZkM and https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYeXNGlbwf4epFS2l1mZXc_4ldUlgKUV8 and a great little film by Corbijn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwytKykXbpM . The recording of Troutmask especially is legendary, going as far as inspiring a fairly mainstream film in the past year. And, ofcourse, the first »music video« (i think) to be featured in the MoMA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRlmTzDyw7s . I don't think there's any high quality version of those available on public trackers, if you want an invite to a private one, let me know.

Well, since you mentioned PJ i decided i'd try one of her albums. I've known her very sporadically for a long time, but didn't really listen to her on a larger scale and i don't think i've listened to Is This Desire? before, apart from the single. Have to admit i'm quite picky myself and i'm very happy when i can pluck out a song i like here and there. It's actually quite rare when i find a whole album that i can say i like in it's entirety.. and, well, this is one of them. :) The song writing is extremely tight and sonically it's really beautifully put together. Even though the songs have different arrangements there seems to be a common current running through the whole album, a certain dark, swampy tone that permeates in all the songs. Will have to find time to focus on the lyrics too. Thanks :)

To be honest, in the days when he was hopelessly poor, i liked him more too. ;) I think Patti is doing a 40th anniversary tour of Horses next year, which should be pretty great. Beefheart seems to be at the heart of so many different artists, even Woody Allen is supposedly a fan. How are you liking Anna Calvi btw? She also cited the Captain as an influence. I've heard her fairly casually on the radio but i had no idea she was such a phenomenal guitarist. I think i'll have to pay more attention to her. Before Morrissey announced the extra tour dates i briefly entertained the idea of seeing him over the weekend in London.. where Anna opened for him. Might have been worthwhile, but i'm sure there will be other chances.

Both shows were great, thanks. Patti still has an amazing voice as does Steven and they both have a special presence just by walking on stage. Patti even did a cover of Perfect day, one of my favorite songs (she actually sings it better live than Lou did). I saw Morrissey in Padova a month before but the Zagreb show was much superior, the crowd was better and the show much longer. Maybe the setlist was a bit burdened by the new album, but overall i loved it. :) Can are my probably my favorite »krautrockers« and i think they are the main influence behind the sound of the whole british post-punk, especially PIL and the Banshees. I've been looking at your charts to see if there's anything that i could suggest and i think you may like Captain Beefheart, if you don't already know it. Troutmask replica is the more venerated album, but i prefer Safe as milk. I think the turning point of Waits' career just before Swordfishtrombones was finding Beefheart in Kathleen's record collection. :)

Zdravo! ;)

Thank you! Some of the artists I'm talking about don't escape the reality - quite the opposite - they actually face it and express what they feel, so if you can relate to their feelings, it can literally ease your pain, because you don't feel alone anymore. But the other thing that kills me is that recently they (and by "them" I mean several dumb, tasteless and absolutely disguisting people who sit in the parliament and consider themselves very important) have cancelled some of the concerts and other cultural events in Russia.. just because they decided those artists were "enemies"! I mean.. who the fuck are you to decide??? There is a great Ukrainian band Okean Elzy, they performed on Maidan and now our politicians just blocked all of their shows in Russia.. though all they were bringing us was love and peace. Obviously it's exactly what the politicians do not want here
