The Residents - Having been together since 1969, proggessive/avant-garde band the Residents still remain relatively unknown - on purpose. Though their identities have been kept secret for years, their prolific output of material is undeniably impressive. Having released over 60 albums and various multi-media projects, including live DVDs and short films, the band maintain their music is more important than their identities.
Influencing modern progessive and experimental-leaning bands like Animal Collective, Mr. Bungle, Primus and They Might Be Giants, the Residents' music embraces conceptual, complex arrangements with each album surrounding a particular theme. For example, their Grammy-nominated 1979 album Eskimo, is a metaphor for the downfall of Native Americans at the hands of western civilization. Part of their wide cult following comes from their wild ideas, never rehashing old tricks for new albums, but rather allowing themselves to experiment and bring new ideas with every release.
On top of their wildly experimental music, the band has incorporated a much larger live setup over the years. Utilizing new computer technology, the Residents have come to include various extravagant video and light displays, while continuing to perform in their trademark attire of tuxedos, giant eyeball helmets and top hats. Seeking to create more than a live music experience, the Residents rather focus on having a full-blown live multi-media performance meant to stimulate much more than the ears.
