HORSE LORDS (bandcamp)
Baltimore microtonal avant rock crew Horse Lords return to Toronto in support of their newest outing on RVNG Intl. "Comradely Objects". A not to be missed force of ever evolving rhythmically driven minimalist rock rippers. Sax, guitars & drums intermingle on an endless path, dancing around each other, slowly building a greater structure. Basslines bulbous, balloon over the bottom end, as the percussion keeps things on track for these sci-fi partisans. Insatiable dance grooves grow out of angular guitar & synth interplay. Bits of mutated sonic textures glisten amidst propulsive percussion dominance. Horse Lords balance avant garde techniques, pulling influence from free jazz & electroacoustic tones, with an entrancing rhythmic world driven by the minimalism engine, but oiled with the secretions of global traditional musics. Seriously one of the best bands going. If you are interested in music you will want to be here!
KA BAIRD
Long time experimenter, composer, sound designer, and vocal adventurer, NYC's Ka Baird lands in Toronto for the first time since their Spires That In The Sunset Rise days. Their solo efforts over the last years have seen Baird reach beyond with their extended voice and microphone techniques, and looping compositional prowess with a number of releases on Drag City & RVNG Intl. Building song structures from the most basic elements they create trance like soundscapes employing electronics, glowing minimalist percussive timbres, vocals that feel like they're as essential as breath, and psychoacoustic flute & woodwind textures. In the solo realm Baird's penchant for psych creeps into the work, but never overshadows the playfully personal appeal their rhythmic outsider jams impart. They create a present tense sound with a vigorous delivery that seeks extreme release through physical exertion and psychic extension. One of the most exciting artists working in the avant space these days.
BILE SISTER
Julie Reich's avant pop / synth punk vehicle Bile Sister pulsates with funk and dub inspired rhythms. They move from high energy no wave-esque jams that bite at your heels to dreamy synthscapes full of wobbling bass lines and effected vocals. Reich's playful lyrics bounce over circular synth patterns. Airy electronic tones mix with elastic beats in what sounds like the inside of some haunted computer. If Lydia Deetz formed a band after her experience with Beetlejuice it might sound like this!
