Italian versatile blues singer Zucchero Fornaciari will be among the main artistes who will perform at this year’s Malta Jazz and Rock Festival in July.
The festival, which was previously known as the Malta Jazz Festival, is getting a transformation and will no longer be an exclusive festival of jazz music. This year’s event will take place at the Valletta Waterfront between 19 and 22 July.
The festival was and is still considered to be one of the main summer events held on an annual basis in Malta. Staged below the bastions of the island’s capital at the heart of the breathtaking Grand Harbour, the festival has an unbeatable backdrop.
The festival line-up includes The Wailers, Australian Pink Floyd, Nina Ferro, Tribali, Chasing Pandora, Ivan Filletti, The Characters and PP. Arnold & Dr Robert.
The Malta Jazz and Rock Festival is being organised by NnG Promotions and the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts.
NnG director Nigel Camilleri and Tourism and Culture Minister Francis Zammit Dimech addressed a media conference at Le Meridien St Julian’s yesterday.
Mr Camilleri said the music genres of the festival are varied enough to please everyone’s taste.
“Undoubtedly, we have invested heavily in getting world renowned international talent for this year’s festival. This is set to be the music festival of the year,” he said, adding that equally impressive names from the local music scene will be participating in the festival.
Mr Camilleri said the festival, along with several other initiatives that are being taken by NnG, are strengthening Malta’s name as an ideal destination for international concerts and festivals.
“This is an incredible year for concerts and events of international calibre being staged in Malta. Such events are strengthening Malta’s credentials to attract world known artists and the interest by foreigners and potential visitors in such events is significant.”
Dr Zammit Dimech said that all the events organised during the past year by the Tourism and Culture Ministry and other entities that fall under its remit, were intended to contribute to the development of the local tourism sector.
Among the activities were the Malta Arts Festival, Notte Bianca, Notte Magica and Notte Gozitana, as well as other activities like the International Food and Fireworks Festival, the International Choirs Festival, the Walled Cities Festival and the Mediterranean Folk Festival.
Minister Zammit Dimech said that such cultural festivals were an important asset that could further improve the country’s tourist product and enhance Malta’s image as a destination that offers numerous popular and cultural events.
The festival will open with a performance by Australian Pink Floyd, better known as “Aussie Floyd”, on Thursday 19 July. Formed in 1988 in Adelaide, South Australia, they were the first Pink Floyd tribute band to tour in the UK in 1993, starting off with the first International Pink Floyd Fan Convention at Wembley Convention Centre.
Zucchero will bring the festival to a close on Sunday 22 July. He is probably best known internationally for the song Senza una donna, which later became a duet with Paul Young. This year, Zucchero is promoting his most recent album Fly, which was released last year.
The Malta Jazz and Rock Festival will also feature The Characters, Tribali and The Wailers on Friday 20 July, Nina Ferro, Chasing Pandora and PP. Arnold & Dr Robert on Saturday 21 July and finally Ivan Filletti, followed by Zucchero’s performance on Sunday 22 July. All shows start at 9pm.
