comparing the original's soundtrack to the remake's is unironically like the soul vs soulless meme. i'm not even saying it's particularly bad overall (though some of the reinterpretations did hurt) but rather incredibly mediocre.

i dont think theyre soulless but rather just different, you gotta remember there was more than 2 decades in between these lol

Yeah, i get it. I'm happy he made it himself and got to do it the way he obviously wanted to make it (omitting almost all original samples in favor of re-creating sounds with real instruments) and that people seem to like it. Just for me personally the 2001 version is defined by its lo-fi, crunchy & often static-y nature and the uncanny, ethereal effect they create. Also, I find the reduced and more minimalistic approach to songwriting more interesting and beautiful. The new versions definitely sound more polished and sleek, but that's exactly why I find them lacking, I guess. Like I said, I don't even hate it (with the exception of what he did to Betrayal), the actual songwriting is as good as you'd expect from Akira Yamaoka and I will be the first to admit that some of the new renditions of the "big" tracks are pretty amazing, at least equal to their original counterparts (Love Psalms and Angel's Thanatos i.e.). And yet, overall it still left me wanting, if that makes any sense.

for sure, i agree that the 2001 soundtrack is way better but I think that the new one isn't bad by any means
