The idea behind this musical was okay. I mean, once upon a time, I did spend many years upset that Christine abandoned the Phantom and left with Raoul. However, the execution could have been better. If people say that the original London production was worse than the Melbourne production, well, I don't want to imagine that... As for the music itself, it's not bad. Several songs stand out, even if none are quite as iconic as "The Phantom of the Opera". I /will/ listen to the soundtrack again.

Some of the music here is fantastic in its own right, when you take it on its own merits, rather than the demerits in comparison to the original Phantom.

The music is decent, though it can't even compare with any of Webber's best works. The real problem however is the dreadful, dreadful joke of a plot.

Just saw this recently in the West End at the Adelphi Theatre. Very exciting! Strong, strong, show - but perhaps will not be a popular as Phantom. When Christine sings her area in the 2nd act, we were seated in the center of the 2nd row of the balcony, and I was in tears, it was so beautifully magnificent! I'm a huge ALW fan - and really love this show. Parts of it are simply captivating!

I think the music is beautiful but the plot is lacking. While I won't spoil the ending once the story begins there is no surprise as to who she chooses to be with at the end. Also the Phantom is not at all like his counterpart in the original. He is not the mad shadowy genius who is willing to go t o any length for his Christine but a sorrowful business tycoon who is about as mysterious as a bag of chips. And while Webber says he does not think of "Love Never Dies" a sequel but simply a story with the same characters. That idea does not work; we need to treat them as part of the same universe to understand character development and motivation. I wish the story was better then this would probably have worked. As it stands it has a few good songs but with a story centered on an unsurprising love story and a custody battle. There remains little suspense to keep me interested.

phoenixtears: Nope, I'm here to post angry comments. Honestly, I haven't heard the music yet, nor do I know the real story of this play, but I am very against the idea. The main reason I haven't done any real research on it yet is because every time I think of a PotO sequel I get sick to my stomach. It's a VERY bad idea, and would be very, very hard to pull off. ALW really isn't as great as he once was, either -- his heyday was the 80s. >_< I intend to learn more about it eventually, but for now I'm burying my head in the sand.

Ah dang it, the last time I looked here there weren't any shouts here yet! I wanted to post the first one. :( I will admit that I like the music, but I don't really approve of this sequel It kind of screws around with the original too much. I'm sure I'd enjoy it as a standalone story, but not as a sequel to one of my favorite musicals. It kind of destroys songs like "Angel of Music" and "All I Ask of You" if you take the sequel into account. It also makes the final words of "it's over now, the music of the night" a complete lie. *sighs* I'm surprised that there aren't more negative comments here, because most of the people I've been around are admantly anti-sequel. I guess I get the grand distinction of being the first to post a negative opinion on this musical. *awaits an onslaught of angry ALW fans" Please don't kill me.
