I assure you, sadly, most artists are when it comes to politics. That's not a knock on them - many of us are about at least some subjects. No one can be a genius about everything, and we all have our blind spots. And that's okay, as long as we know how to stay in our lanes. Ariel Pink is smart where it matters - his music and art. And that's good enough for me.

Indeed. This is something I feel like a broken record on, for almost 10 years: "Two things can both be true." Trump is a blight on our politics, a narcissistic man-child, bullshitter par excellance, who has no business being trusted to be dog catcher much less President. But it's also true that TDS is a thing. Trump does have a talent for making people crazy, which sets up this bizarre co-dependency dynamic between MAGA and (some!) of its critics. The thing I find frustrating is that if I say anything negative about Trump/the Dems, people immediately response with, "But the Dems/Trump!" Well, two things can both be true. Trump being awful doesn't exonerate Dems or TDS-infected critics. Dems being awful doesn't exonerate Trump. Also, Trump isn't Hitler, and probably isn't the worst President. Pretty awful enough though. Point is, if I say something bad about X, that's independent of Y. People really need to get themselves outside of this ridiculous zero-sum binary thinking.

That's the tricky thing. Personally, I never thought he was funny. I knew people who would, on the one hand, be Never-Trump all get out, and yet who'd say, "Well, he is funny, you have to give him that." It might just be that humor is subjective, but I never thought he was funny. He's an obnoxious twat, with an object-permanence not much better than the standard-issue goldfish, with all the subtlety and thoughtfulness of a monkey escaped from a cocaine study. So the trick, then, is to keep that in mind, and not let his obnoxiousness bait you. That's often what people like him are after; to get reactions out of people. They're like emotional vampires. So deny them that. Rather than go full TDS - as tempting as that is - I try to be more '"grey rock." It doesn't mean unemotional Vulcan, but it means staying self-confident, in good humor, and focusing more on the irrationality and tyranny of a given policy. He doesn't matter personally, beyond maybe observing his inconsistency.

Remind me to locate your favorite artists and to shit on their Last.fm pages. I can't say that I care for Ariel Pink's politics - such as they are, though I suspect he's not exactly the MAGA type people assumed. And I don't really make a habit of delving into the tabloidy details of artists' personal lives. What I do care about is the art. Art is about the transcendent, helping us to escape the grubby daily grind, where the things that divide us can be left behind. So I want that here - tell me about the art. I care about as much about an artist's politics as I do about my hairdresser's, my mechanic's. And I'll give Ariel Pink this much - I frankly know way too much about the political opinions of too many musicians, who for some reason think they have some special expertise about politics and can't help but vomit forth their opinions to in venues where fans just want to know about their new album. Pink has never taken that pose.
