Even Dylan's always admitted candidly he prefers Hendrix's version over his original one.

Released on March 19, 1962 the album "Bob Dylan" was Bob's debut album, produced by John H Hammond and called "Hammond's Folly' because it was a commercial flop, only sold about 2500 copies. This is a traditional song arranged for Bob by Dave Van Ronk, one of Bob' mentors.

The Animals can lick Dylan's shoes [4] as far as this tune goes. There's just something immaculate about his voice on this track...it's so aggressively wistful and absolutely devastating, in the most staggeringly brilliant way possible. And yeah, naysayers, I prefer Dylan to The Animals hands down, but the reason I prefer (understatement) this version to theirs or any other is because, imo, it's just straight up fucking better.

This is OK: one of Bob's better covers. As oldiesfanjohn points out, the Animals cover sung by Eric Burdon is the standard by which all versions of this song must be judged. Guthrie, Dylan, Baez, Simone etc - all have had a go, but none of them comes close to Burdon on this.

I doubt I've ever heard anyone sing with this much feeling. People can say what they want about Bob Dylan's singing, but I think this is as good as it gets. [2]

Far better than The Animals' version. This is stripped down to the essence of folk music - an acoustic guitar and a determined singer.

this is the greatest song he ever sang, I swear to all the stars in the sky it's a brilliant piece of glory.

Best version I've ever heard, even though it is a ripoff of Dave van Ronk's version.
