I heard this album for the first time in a storm, it was an incredible experience the sky had the same color as the album 💙💛

maybe it's ok as a first effort, yet otherwise it's a very dull record, surely their weakest work, I'm sorry

With its bass-driven gloomy, gothic soundscapes, maybe Cocteau Twins were a bit late to the scene with this particular flavour of the post-punk movement, which started 3 to 4 years before. That's the only reason I can think of for the generally low ratings this album has on most sites. But don't be mistaken. This record is a very good exhibition of atmospheric post-punk music. However, this niche was crowded in the late 70s and 80s, and it's nice that the band veered away from this style and became the unique dream pop and ethereal wave innovators we know today.

Totally agree, but, in my opinion, it would be better if they continued to make post-punk music. In post-punk sounds, they are more unique than in dream pop ones.

In retrospect, yes, they may not sound unique any more given the number of dream pop bands that have sprung up, but at that time, no one sounded like them. Maybe some goth bands like The Cure had some overlap sonically, but they were on of a kind. And I think they still are today, according to me. When I listen to something like Head Over Heels or Victorialand, I am in absolute awe, every time.

I think you are right. This impression may have come from the fact that dream pop was a popular genre at the time.

The artwork is kind of disturbing but it captures the atmosphere of the music extremely well. It's the bloody horror, paranoia and the eery remoteness of the Scottisch landscape all coming at you at once. Their later artwork was magnificent (credits to Envelope 23) but became much more abstract. This one therefore stands out in their discography, I think.

Essential Cocteau Twins (but to be fair I think you can say this for pretty much all of their discography). Such a great goth sound to this album, amazing how many different sounds and styles they were able to pull off.

Am I the only one who, in spite of loving CT's other albums, absolutely can't stand this album? I feel annoyed whenever any track comes on. Perhaps another time. I really can't seem to open the doorway to this one.

I'd really like to find more albums that balance out ethereal wave and post-punk as well as this album. Dead Can Dance's first album comes the closest.

I have a T-shirt with the album cover on it to wear on Halloweens so I don't have to spend effort on costumes. It is plenty horrifying.

Every time I listen to this album I think about how it had the sound which, being further-developed, became known as trip-hop.

Never understood why this record gets so much hate. Love its bleak, almost oppressive atmosphere.
