Dr. Donald Byrd and the Black Birds. Donald Byrd was a Jazz Messenger back in the early 50's and he continued to inovate with his horn and sounds will into the late 20th Century. When his first recording of the Black Birds came out, we at WBLS 107.5 (NYC) were the very first to play their music on Air, another of those "cardboard box" albums from Mr. Frankie Crocker during the early 1970's.
