My favourite meme is genre illiterate erudites calling anything remotely "posty" Neurosis. It's irrisory because they started as crust. My second favourite meme is: "Neurosis? Man, I dunno, what they are they? what genre do they play? No one knows, mang... They're their own genre. It's just... Neurosis, dude". My third favourite meme is claiming neocrust isn't crust. There's just no d-beat present in Gaia anymore (new album does not count). My fourth favourite meme is lumping anything "quirky", "peculiar" and "weird" as "progressive". "Isis, CoL and Tool etc are brogressive". Gaia are screamo.

Their first demo and split album were crust/sludge stuff -- there has been absolutely nothing crust about them since Epos but people refuse to let it go lol

To put in my two cents: I couldn't really get into Downfall of Gaia before, to me the new album is a huge gateway for their earlier stuff.

It's just post-black metal, vocals don't mean much. Band stopped having anything to do with crust after their first album.

Ethic really hits the mark a few times. The Grotesque Illusion of Being and Of Withering Violet Leaves are absolute 10/10 tracks. I feel the two longest tracks have a bit of idling, tho a lot of great moments too. Overall a delightfully good album even when I had huge expectations as Atrophy was one of my favourites of 2016.

Ethic of Radical Finitude is an incredible album. Downfall of Gaia are masters of the introduction: beautiful clean gloomy post-rock guitar passages with drummer Michael Kadnar shaping the structure of what's to come. Their sound is massive, I absolutely love the lingering tremolo picked riffs and melodies combined with intense vocals and absolutely incredible drumming. Michael Kadnar is such a breath of fresh air in black metal drumming: his blast beats are very dynamic with perfectly placed accents, and his way of playing and constructing fills actually reminds me more of guys like Ben Koller (Converge) and Nick Yacyshyn (Sumac) than black metal drummers. It brings the music to another level, it is very atmospheric, but also visceral.

Just discovered these guys due to The Ocean... But what the fuck is with the 'screamo' tag... What is screamo? Is it this?

I saw them yesterday in Tilburg (The Netherlands). Lots of people left after Hamferð's set, which is a shame, because Downfall of Gaia were amazing. Really intense performance, I was extremely impressed with Michael Kadnar's drumming: so powerful, yet so subtle and dynamic!

Suffocating in the Swarm of Cranes - this is something new for me. It is even possible that this is exactly what I was looking for all these years, listening to albums of different bands and artists in completely different styles ranging from long ago the classic Heavy, Thrash, Groove to a fucking Gorenoise, Coprogrind and even certain Shitcore (includes Breakcore, Speedcore and Noisecore). Yet this musical satisfaction that I had never experienced before. Enchanting!
