Are there other contemporary artists that followed in his footsteps and approached pop with a more colourful, DIY, and patchwork aesthetic? I feel Gotye's popularity would have provided a golden opportunity for pop artists to really break free and experiment/try different sounds, but I'm hoping I'm just ignorant to the artists that did do this?

Watched this video "Why the world's biggest song caused Gotye to quit" and, well, that's a really impressive story, I must say! To deliberately abandon this brand - Gotye - that had just fired.. That's so undeniably anticommercial. I have great respect for the guy now and am going to listen to all his discography (as Gotye and with The Basics), I promise.:)

Ok, three albums by Gotye are done. And they are extremely good! Every album has literally only two or three tracks that are somewhat on the weaker side (in my oppinion, of course). But the great thing is that for Gotye this 'weaker side' happens to be like what for many-many musicians would be their best songs.) Listening to his albums I just feel that his atitude was: "no filler material, ever". Ok, now on to The Basics..
