I always feel tears well up every time I hear this, sometimes because of the sad mellow tone of it or because of the memories I have connected to it or just because of the sheer beauty of this thing and the way Trane and his guys deliver it directly to your soul. I don't know any other instrumental that touches me this profoundly still every time, since being a kid. Truely a work of art.

memories of a beautiful central park...dad paddling us across rowboat lake...riding my favorite horse round the carousel...concerts in summer...that's where i first heard ravel's bolero...does my childhood ghost still picnic there...?

Ballads can be, well, boring. But Coltrane played ballads without losing his intensity.

I believe you can really hear Dexter Gordon's influence on 'Trane in this piece. This is transcendent music that makes life worth living.
