Yeah, definitely my favorite Cohen album, i became obsessed with this for a whole day and even wrote some poems inspired by the Cohen's approaches here. Thank god i love Spector's production, wall of sounds and all that stuff, because i believe that the way the themes work here, it as meant to be this way really. The vulnerability with sex and love here is as tender at points as devastating at others emotionally. Cohen's poetry is still amazing and addapted into a very dirty representation of a decadent man. I love every single bit of this record, every single bit of it.

I'm not going to say it's his best or my favorite or anything, but this is far from the disgrace that most fans and critics would have you believe. Spector and Cohen are an odd fit, especially since it's Spector at his most bombastic (rather than the Phil Spector who produced John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band record). But once you get past the shock of reedy voiced Leonard Cohen struggling to be heard over the booming 60s Pop/Girl Group arrangements Spector has given him to work with, you'll realize there's a kind of brilliance to it. It's not for everyday listening, but I enjoy it when I get the itch for it.

the vocals are really weak, but I think it suits the lyrics bc of the running theme of impotence

Interesting to consider that thematically. I definitely think his thin, reedy voice was smothered by the Wall of Sound

It would've been Cohen's weakest album to date anyway, but Spector's shameful production is the final nail that makes it unlistenable.

I understand why this is a divisive album - it took me a while to get into in, but once I did, WOW!

That kind of sound was quite outdated in 1977, that's why the album is underrated. Imagine if Marvin Gaye's "What's goin' on" had been made a few years later.

Seriously underrated record. Just listen to it! It's an absolute gem.. Knowing that it's Phil Spector, knowing the history of the record.. It's a legendary piece of work!

i don't understand why many people dislike this album... it's strange, yes, but i think the sounds and words work so well together.

Indeed very underrated. Sounds very different to all his other albums but I'd say it's one of my top 3 albums by him. Fantastic lyrics and music, although two or three songs are weaker...

Brilliant. Cohen's rowdiest set of tunes + Spector's production that was nostalgic in the 60s but sounds rotten to the core in the 70s - in the best way possible. No other album sounds like this. Paper Thin Hotel and the title track are masterpieces and the rest is on par. Oh, and Cohen throwing a funk tune..sweet.
