I wasn't feeling Oath at all at first and was honestly considerably let down. Truly felt like an Envy type of thing with their latest. It wasn't as immediate as Nowhere Now Here and Pilgrimage of the Soul only finally clicked a year ago during a crisis/critical period. I suppose a year to take in an album is not alarming, rare. I wanted more heavy screechy gueetar and violent chaotic distortion/outbursts. Oath feels like a sister album to Pilgrimage of the Soul, a more subdued version of it. Given the imagery and all. As a Rays of Darkness/The Last Dawn dynamic. Yes, indeed; some dreamy heavenly soundtrack to the animu movie/series of your life.

Pilgrimage is a great album. But it's a bad MONO album. I was like "yeah cool, wacky guitars, smashing drums and then a mellow bridge" and that's basically MONO's formula of the past 65 years. Requiem and Nowhere had interesting moments for MONO's standards, Pilgrimage is just...MONO moments. Still better than Nickelback, at least.

"Hold Infinity in the Palm of Your Hand" and "And Eternity in an Hour" are the most beautiful things in the history of music or in the history at all. And they are both in the same album of the same band. Its a miracle and its happening right now

Well its a normal thing i guess. At least thats how I feel when riptide came out. But its not a problem with their new songs, its a problem with their old listeners who love them for other things

Сначала забыли на запись поставить и получилось полторы минуты ничего, а потом какой-то рок попёр. Очень непонятная композиция, как "риптайд" её явно не охарактеризуешь, а вот как "старость не радость" вполне.

У меня к этому коллективу просто очень завышенные ожидания. Нормального такого рока пруд пруди, с пиздатыми звуками и надрывами. Хотя теперь, когда фул альбом релизнулся, то я вижу что был не прав и зря наехал на дедусек, потому что остальные вещи на альбоме в очередной раз звучат по-новому. А будучи пост рок бандой это опупенный челендж между прочим, звучать не заново по-очередному, а в очередной раз по-новому. Но риптайд это всё ещё самая слабая вещь с релиза

Am I crazy, or has everything they've released in the last near-on decade just been a shadow of their former selves? It feels a little phoned in, like the music is just going through the motions. Saw the announcement for the new album and just felt apathetic towards it, which sucks from a band I used to love so much.

Had a very similar discussion just a few hours earlier here on Last.fm, but I think they’ve been mega consistent as a band. I love their earlier albums the most so I get where your head is at. I’m a sucker for the louder, borderline-shoegaze guitars that are so prevalent on their earlier stuff… and moments of Pipal / One Step actually tap into the magic of early Mogwai slowcore, which never fails to stir something in me. From there I think Mono hit it out of the park with their orchestral phase, and in recent years, especially, it feels like they’ve done a great job blending the two. I think we’re just being a little jaded having been floored by their first stretch of albums that won us over. New record is supposed to be more upbeat and electronic by comparison and I have faith it’ll be pretty great even if it doesn’t fully capture my heart like their first handful of LPs. To call them a shadow of their former selves does seem a little harsh though.

I did feel a bit "I mean...Pilgrimage is great, but it's pretty much what you'd expect out of MONO" recently. But dang it, I loved Requiem and Nowhere. I feel making a double album with Last Dawn/Darkness was a bit odd and so on. Shadow of their former selves? Nah. "One More Step" is cold and harsh all over the place, I prefer it when they include more mellow sounds every now and then.

I'm listening to Dream Odyssey and I'd like to say that that is Mono at their best. Then I listen to tracks like Ashes In The Snow, Yearning, and Sorrow and I think to myself that it's impossible to decide where Mono was at their best. They are at their best wherever they are, in the past, in the present, in the future. Their music is timeless and will be forever.
