prince does the soundtrack to one of the biggest blockbusters of the entire 1980s, and the lead single? let's make it a 6 minute funk instrumental interspersed with random audio clips from the movie, with a shredding atonal guitar solo, and let's have five identical jokers murder five identical batmen in the music video. and it was a HIT!

"i can't believe this was a big hit for him... it's definitely his worst song. quite possibly the worst song of all time. i seriously do not understand all the fans below." The reason for me is that it's such a fun track. But I can see it's not going to work for everyone.

Also, man, how cool is Prince? Cool enough that he sent a chaotic combination of samples, quotes from unreleased songs, tossed-off funky instrumentation (the bass!), relentless drum machines and a kickarse guitar solo to #1 on the Billboard charts! (... for a week.)

Apparently the samples come from a workprint of Batman, so there's no ADR or sound effects added. They sound pretty rough, but I think that kind of adds to the overall feel of the project. Down and dirty, rough and dark, a bit like Gotham City itself. And it's so funky you can't help but love it.

This is just ludicrous. The samples from the film are so bad that it's almost like Prince took a little dictaphone to a public screening of Batman. It's pretty funny though. I WANNA BUST THAT BODY!
