i used to think this song was about cannibalism, but after watching the mv, it leads me to believe its about surgery and cadavers. the usage of the term "knives" is meant to represent surgical scalpels. the character in the song has passed away due to a failed procedure, and now their body parts are used for good. the perspective of the song is being told from a surgeon, with the usage of "I".

the first two lines is the surgeon informing the patient's family that they died, with the second line representing the surgeon(s) taking pieces out of the patient's body. To me, the line "Don't look down, shove it in your mouth" is the surgeon trying to disassociate from the nasty procedure of removing body parts out of a person that is already dead.

The third line is the most interpretational regardless of whatever overall meaning you impose on the song, but in this context, I look at it as the surgeon once again talking to the patient's family telling them that they would have died regardless if they had the surgery or not. the fourth line is similar to the second one but in this case, the surgeon is removing body parts (organs, etc) and placing them on ice, so they can be used for good. i believe the use of the word "cook" is used to contrast between the actual dissection and cooking of food we consume to survive, and the surgeon removing body parts with the "knife" that can be used in future beneficially.

finally, the last two lines end the song with the surgeon talking to the family, asking for consent for the patient's body to be used as a cadaver, and the surgeon removing parts from their body and putting them on ice. i find it interesting the structure of the song with this interpretation as lines 1,3 & 5 take place after the patient's death, with the surgeon talking to the family, while 2,4 & 6 are during the removal of the patient's body parts, with thom inter-wining the order of events; telling the family the patient died > begin the procedure of taking out his body parts > telling the family that they would have died regardless of the procedure > continue to take body parts out and put them on ice > asking the family for consent of the patient to be used as a cadaver > take body parts out.

i've been practicing my singing for a few weeks using radiohead's music, as thom's register is the one i'd like to sing in. out of all of their songs this one is my favorite one to sing along to :) feels good.

I could listen to this song on loop for a week and completely forget I had it on loop because of how natural and raw it is
