AS A KID IFELT THIS WAS THE GREATEST SONG EVER SUNG. AS A MARINE, RAY MAKES ME BELIEVE IN WHAT/WHO I FIGHT FOR. THERE IS MUCH TO SAY ABOUT MUSIC WHEN HEARING HIM SING THIS. IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE WE'VE BEEN THROUGH AND WILL FOREVER GO THROUGH HARDSHIPS AS A PEOPLE AGAINST OURSELVES. AS MUCH AS AN OXYMORON AS THESE WORDS SAY, AT THE LEAST, FOR 3-4 MINUTES, ONE MAN SCORNED, FORGAVE A NATION THAT HATED TO LOVE HIM. I AM PROUD TO SAY I AM A UNITED STATES MARINE. GOD BLESS ALL THAT YOU'VE TOUCHED RAY CHARLES ROBINSON

I grew up singing this song in school, but I never really listened and heard the lyrics until I heard Ray Charles sing it.

I first heard this on the Mark Levin show on Fridays. A beautiful rendition of the song.

The lyrics were written in 1893 by Katherine Lee Bates, Bates, a professor of English literature at Wellesley. She penned them after climbing Pike's Peak on her trip to visit the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It was set in 1910 to the music of Materna composed in 1882 by Samuel A. Ward.

Mr. Charles effectively demonstrates that *this* song should be the U.S. national anthem, instead.
