"It's about my mom and it's about the time when I was in my band before we were ever signed and we were complete nobodies-I mean we still are complete nobodies but we're big nobodies-and I wrote that during a time when all I heard about my band was negativity. I'd go to a rehearsal and all I'd hear was about some review where they didn't like us and specifically didn't like me, said I was pretentious or whatever. And I think that 'Mother' was like this- 'Mother will you give attention to my belly button? Because when I was ill my mom used to clean out my belly button or clean the wax out of my ears, she'd take care of me. So that song was some kind of call for my mom to love me. I'm this older person, I feel like shit, everybody hates me and this song was a call to some innocent part of my life, looking for someone to be there for me." Later, I ask Mark when he was happiest in his life. "Before puberty," he replies, without hesitation.
