both versions of this song are completely fine. It's like Crowded House's "don't dream it's over" is awesome, yet Sixpence non the Richer's version is good too. very few artist can get away with that sort of thing.

I adore the Tom Waits original...but Rod certainly sings it well. It just proves that even the most uncommercial artists can have a hit single with a little re-working.
