It's a pretty harrowing tale of addiction and betrayal. Fagen sounds like he means it more than ever on this one. "I've been searching for the song you used to sing to me..."

V.. Calming?..Geez, not when ya listen to the lyrics!.. This loser's shrink probably banged her-Ha!!! -all night long!!!..Hmm, would have a calming effect on ol' Doc Wu though,heh heh!..A great sax solo by Phil Woods!..Calming? A great sex solo by Doctor Wu!!!..Some ppl -V- interpret music differently as they say!!!

One of the best Steely Dan songs ever. Trivia: Becker & Fagen, famous for multi-takes of solos, said Phil Woods did the sax solo exquisitely on first take, but they asked him to do it again just so they could hear it 2x!

This is my favorite SD song, clever word play and a great sax solo by Phil Woods, the last line (before the chorus) is one of DF's most passionate vocal deliveries. Great stuff!

This song is a masterful example of how music should be written. Rich, melodic, transcends genres. Fagen's lyrics are always an enigma...hey Don "are you crazy, are you high, or just an ordinary guy?"

I love this song. The jazzy feel while still having a melody you could sing in the bath. The sax , the harmonies, the modulations. I have no idea what it is about. It doesn't matter.

my opinion chris_near? dr wu's a friend who offered consolation to his buddy during a break up, then fell for the girl himself. too literal, probably. sd always takes my imagination all over the place, so who knows!
