Not to put too fine a point on it, but this is one of the great (unheralded) pop songs. Appropriately for a song about bashfulness and reticence, it starts with misdirection: the portentous drum peal and ostentatious guitar-prepping suggest an epic rocker that never materializes. Then, out of nowhere, everything but a basic rhythm tracks drops out, and we hear a plangent keyboard melody, which temporarily pipes down for the vocals in the verses. Now everything is different: the song is more intimate than the opening gave us any reason to suspect. But the Monsters have a trump up their sleeves--a trumpet melody in the chorus that, impossible though it may seem, is even more heartbreaking than the keyboard melody. Indeed, the trumpet is the chorus. The song is about lacking the words to express your feelings, and so, of course, the chorus, the very heart of the song, is wordless. And after hearing the evocative trumpeting, you wonder if words exist that could express its meaning.
