My Golden Years

I love the lyrics so much. The use of such innocent, immature language to describe the pure and raw emotion of coming-of-age is genius, and akin to Tony Asher's work on Pet Sounds. The song bears such a simple concept, but so profound and true to life. Your 20's are supposed to be this magical, best time of your life. Yet for most, they're also filled with so many anxieties, fears, tragedies and regrets. And the years go by so fast, but you still want to make the best of them. Looking back, I'm sure most of us will still look back at this age with that bittersweet nostalgia. I resonate with that.

  Honestly been thinking about this comment since you first posted and lately, this song has been hitting me like a ton of bricks. The emotion in his voice during that first verse when he sings "'Cause in the blink of an eye, I'll watch these golden years fly by" .... as someone in their late 30s I wonder if they DID fly by and I didn't appreciate them at the time

    Wow, thanks! <3 You nailed it, and I agree on how powerful the song is. My comment was a bit corny, but I do find the lyrics here super emotional when you think about them. They seem to relate to the idea of a quarter life crisis, that comes from society's peer pressure enforced by societal norms to achieve certain things by certain age. The Twigs I think are now in their later 20's as well. I think the most emotional part is the the final realization: "Thinking back on the many times I cried, what could’ve been if I stood up tall and tried" with the explosive cry in the final lines: "And now I know that I can get these golden years to shine." Gives me goosebumps every time.

    Wasn't corny at all to me! The way his voice opens up and those harmonies hit on "SHIIIIIINNNEEEE" is such a perfect moment!

  I’m also feeling this deeply right now, I’ve just turned 36 so make of that what you will, this is a beautiful song and I just love these guys!
