I recently learned that shortly following her performance on this song, Merry Clayton suffered a miscarraige, which is thought to have been at least partially attributed to the strain she put on her self delivering the legendary vocal track that propels this song from great to outstanding. And that makes sense to me, because something this good would more or less require a literal human sacrifice to achieve.
