Jesus, this album sounds amazing. I can't help but think that Miserable Lie is overproduced here though, but maybe that's just because I've gotten used to the version on the debut LP.

I wouldn't say "overproduced" as both versions to my ears only have 6 predominant tracks - which is essentially no different to the band performing live on stage (4 tracks) . The Troy Tate mix sounds raw and it captures the energy and spirit of the band performing live - Miserable Lie was notoriously one of their loudest songs live etc. It sounds like an unproduced monitor mix without a mix-down more than anything (hence how abrasively loud and trebly it is). Whereas the John Porter version seems to have the same number of predominant tracks only they've been mixed down more clinically, resulting in a sterile, soft and restrained sound - but more time was spent on the production process of the John Porter version, than the Troy Tate version for sure

nah! morrissey sings better and marr plays crisper. reel around the fountain is great here, handsome devil is wonderful, suffer little children is amazing, and miserable lie even almost works. Its a pity the recording is off but production can't dampen things that are essentially great.

This is definitely not a better version than the eponymous LP. The timing is noticeably off on a couple of tracks. Their proper debut is much better produced.
