my grandad made me listen to this song so i could learn it and play guitar and sing to it for him and i’m so glad he did because this song is so beautiful and meaningful

I love the Style Council, but I still can't help but wonder where the Jam would have gone with a few more albums. I know that Sound Affects is their supposed masterpiece, but the funky The Gift is my favorite album and their last. I bet they would have gotten even better a few albums deeper.

I'm with fancykatya... keep both versions. Always loved the uptempo, 80s record with its jazzy guitar licks and great r&b horns. It was so catchy it actually got radio airplay -- something that rarely happened for Styl Cncl in the US. This slower "torch song" take is equally beautiful -- and Paul's stretched out vocals help the lyrics hit home even harder. Talk 'bout your "ever changing moods..."
