Sex Pistols are alternative and so is punk music (not pop punk or stuff like that).

As for alternative rock, it covers a lot of ground in that regard. From The Velvet Underground to Limp Bizkit. It's too broad and ambiguous term that can't be explained with terms or caught with your own ears. Sex Pistols were "alternative" route to the punk music of the time which, as I have said, were poppy.

This term lost its meaning over the years. When I was in high school in the 00s I remember other kids calling bands like Nickelback and Coldplay alternative rock. It's fine if you like that, but I don't see how bands who are on Top 40 radio and filling up stadiums are an alternative to anything.
