Modern country music fans have always had a hard time deflecting criticism, as the musical inferiority and lack of authenticity that plagues the genre is so evident it's impossible to defend it. Nevertheless, a few still tried. But now that Beyoncé has invented the genre, I think even the die-hardest of them won't even try.

There is lots of older country music by both men and women that is really good. The 2000s ruined country music by merging it with pop and making it all about beer, women, and trucks. People like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, and many more make fantastic old style country that gets deep to the heart and is real story telling.

they are full of pop songs, with a touch of country. Listen to Nikki Lane maybe you realize what country nowadays sounds. Listen to Sam Outlaw, or other newer artists and maybe you will see the difference, and if you don't see it maybe you don't like country.

There is certainly a difference, but when Taylor debuted she was pretty firmly categorised as Country. She was inspired by other Country (Pop) acts (Faith Hill, Shania Twain), debuted on a Country Label, was nominated for Country Awards... No doubt, those influences faded over time until they were non-existent, but Country has always been a genre engaged in heavy cross-over (just look at the entire Nashville sound that started in the late 50s, the Country Rock of the 70s, the Country Pop of the 80s, etc.) Almost all "major" genres of music, and I would consider Country one of those, consist of a wide breadth of music, not a small, pure, niche. Yet you see this in all sorts of music - folks saying that's not "trve cvlt" metal, or "real hip hop", or people yelling "JUDAS!" at Dylan when he went Electric. It's a tale as old as time, and you really ought to get over it and just accept that musical genre is a fluid distinction with soft boundaries.
