There are three main strands of d-beat hardcore: 1) Discharge clones, not too fast, sometimes quite heavy instead, abrasive and gloomy; 2) Anti-Cimex/Shitlickers/Avskum followers who focus on blistering speed and intensity, otherwise quite similar to the former; 3) Mob 47/Crudity school, very fast too, but the influence of Discharge is slightly decreased in favor of American hardcore like D.R.I. Aforementioned 2) and 3) varieties mostly came from Sweden and were often called 'kängpunk' (or 'raw punk'). But there were also similar Finnish and Japanese bands in the early-to-mid 80s, heavily influenced by Discharge too, but I think in this case there were a better balance with influence from the rest of UK82/street punk scene, such as The Exploited, G.B.H., Chaos UK, Disorder, etc. Sometimes such bands were really similar to conventional d-beat hc, but not quite: for example, Finnish bands like Kaaos and Riistetyt were even more chaotic and noisy than Swedish artists.

Crust punk can rely a lot on d-beats rhythmically, but this is not necessary even in case of faster varieties of crust, especially if you look into the bands from the 80s and 90s. Nowadays it has become a habit to consider d-beat a subgenre of crust punk, but I'd argue this is a bad and somewhat misleading habit. They are distinct, even if similar sometimes, and d-beat existed for several years before crust punk appeared... I think that the main source of confusion are early Doom releases (demos and '88 album), where they sometimes closely mimicked Discharge, and later Anti-Cimex, who became a bit more crusty and metallic over time. Also the prevalence of d-beat drums in both genres, and also that both of these scenes came together in the end: both genres share the same fan base, bands play and hang out together, etc. Not surprisingly since all of this is a part of the wider anarcho-punk scene, to begin with! This is why people often can't tell them apart.

Chrisdeg, do you know a band named Discharge? They were precursors of d-beat. This is kind of trend, some d-beat / crust bands wants their name sound similar to Discharge by dis- or -charge (Recharge, Kegcharge). Some of them are even using similar font (compare Discharge logo to Disgust, Recharge or Disclose logo).

People who keep saying dbeat is just a drum pattern: it's also the style of vocals (shouted slogans about the problems with contemporary society), the overly distorted guitars (taken from nwobhm sort of), and the sort of weird solos that sound like they're just playing random notes a lot of the time, haha.

I hate this tag so much due to the fact it's not really a legitimate genre. But fuck do I love these bands!
