I think the bands that sum this style up the best Sadness, Triptykon, Chiva, Monumentum (first demo), Shadowseeds, Long Winters' Stare, Riti Occulti, Belmez, and Bethlehem (especially their SUIZID album). It's like a mix of black/death/doom metal with gothic atmosphere. Hell, even Therion's "Lepaca Kliffoth" album could be summed up as dark metal, as it touches upon multiple different styles like the aforementioned bands do.

the tag is not redundant, it serves well to categorize a combination of genres which is a niche sound, but was fairly popular in the 90s, there are similar bands today too... it may sound dumb at first, but it's not something new, it's been around for years...

so called dark metal is either black/doom or gothic with black metal influences.
