"Real Indie Rock" only consists of the pnw DIY scene and the late 80's College Rock scene. What is known by "Post-Punk Revival" is nothing but Pop Rock with questionable real indie influence. When people try to argue that bands like Arctic Monkeys are not real indie, while saying that Arcade Fire are I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake indie as Arctic Monkeys (plus the pretentiousness). Real indie sounds AUTHENTIC, INTENSE and somewhat AGGRESSIVE. Fake indie is weak, cash grab and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL INDIE ROCK are The Replacements, Pixies, Interpol (the only real indie band from the post-punk revival scene) and Modest Mouse. Some examples of FAKE INDIE are Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes INDIE BELONGS TO DIY NOT TO DANCE-PUNK, POP ROCK, CHAMBER POP OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

indie rocks history gotta be one of the bleakest examples of greed. It started out as something studios wouldn't promote. It was genuine and artists had the most control. Then it started being recognized as a genre. Then studio execs thought "hey we can release albums under the pretense that we are not interfering". It's like if now punk rock was made that sounds exactly like blackflag or d.kennedys, but there was a corporate exec giving orders. It's just bleak and void of art.

I always get tripped up on whether or not to distinguish alt rock and indie rock (especially in the context of the 1980s/early 90s). For instance, they call Sonic Youth one of the first indie bands but they were also an (early) alt rock band in the mid-late 1980s...

I must say, i like Indie Rock, i admit it were hard to begin with. Damn what a musical genre to discover. I do like Arctic Monkeys best and i likes Neutral Milk Hotel.
