Is there a difference between neoclassical, contemporary classical, and modern classical music? It feels like they're all being used interchangeably.

"Neoclassicism" refers to the movement, "neoclassical" describes the music itself. They're not different genres no matter how much you pretend otherwise.

So, um, I really do enjoy darkwave, but this is a really bizarre and misleading tag.

This is ridiculous - this isn't NEOCLASSICAL music; these are modern derivatives and sub-genres. Neoclassical music is completely different - it originated in the 20th century, with composers such as Stravinsky (with works such as Pulcinella), Prokofiev, Ravel, and, I believe, Satie. Even some of Schoenberg's more expressionist/serialist stuff had some neoclassical influences. I don't mean to sound pretentious, but when I play "Neoclassical" radio, I don't want to be listening to all this Dark Wave/metal/new age crap which, although it has its roots in neoclassical music, is completely different.
