I wish there was a distinguished genre name between Club/Party Pop and songs like "Kiss Me" by Sixpence None The Richer and "Still Falling For You" by Ellie Goulding. They are Pop but not the kind you listen to in a club, they are like for individual listening almost. I probably sound crazy, but I wonder if there other terms...

just like every genre and subgenre, pop has its own ups and downs. disliking it as a whole is utter pretense. YOU liked a pop tune one way or another. you’re not going to get killed, just admit it. you don’t have to make the underground artist with 276 monthly listeners your whole personality.

But at the same time, there’s nothing wrong with preferring non-mainstream artists and it doesn’t automatically mean that one is pretentious or snobby. It’s just a preference. It’s not the 1990’s anymore and there are plenty of ways to discover new music besides analog radio stations, which play the same top 40 songs every day. Let people branch out and listen to what they want.

I did not mean to insinuate to restrict people from branching out from what is considered popular. I agree that it is a more exciting way of enjoying music. It is just annoying to witness, every single day, people throw tomatoes on this genre on surface level when so many phenomenal artists actually thrived in this genre such as Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder. I also agree that the modern Top 40 is on a downward slope.

Pop is just short for popular, so it can be from any genre that hits the charts: rock, soul, rap, country, blues, alternative, etc. Many people think of pop as catchy songs written by Max Martin, Dr. Luke, or similar composers, but it’s not limited to that genre. It’s whatever happens to be popular at any given time.
