Considering The Sonics released a proto-punk record in 1965, and people sometimes credit The Ramones debut as the first punk album, punk stayed proto for quite a while no? Not sure I understand why we don't just call The Stooges, Tor Steine Scherben and MC5 punk. But would like to know why :)

Because "proto-punk" is a purely retrospective term, a catch-all term for anything that even remotely resembled punk rock aesthetics back in the 60's and early '70s, or influenced it. There is no reason to consider protopunk bands as any kind of 'ground zero' kickstarting punk rock genre as such.

In their times, this genre (early 70s punk) was simply known as garage rock revival.

Salud. https://playlistspotify.wordpress.com/2015/07/23/cronica-del-rock-de-1905-a-2015/

I've been digging deep into the 60s/70s record crates lately and a lot of what I pull up I find being called "proto-punk". It seems that punk didn't start with the Ramones et al., but was gradually developed out of the noisier, grittier side of garage rock over a decade or more. In that way, you could just as well call punk "post-garage". You could date it back to early Kinks and The Who, at least. (to use some more well known examples) If it's not known to you, you owe it to yourself to check it out... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Rnq_PrFpqo

I had no idea I listened to so much "proto-punk" :P i always regarded this as classic punk and bands like bad brains and black flag as hardcore. Granted, the bands under this tag (Stooges, NY Dolls, VU) are really in a league of their own and i respect seeing them distinguished from other acts

It's great having this comprehensive collection of artists that laid the foundation for punk music. I did see the wrong band called "Death" in the list (who are heavy metal and started their band way later). The original band named Death is from Detroit. They released their first album under that name in 1976.

proto-punk was a name applied retrospectively to a sub-genre of 60s rock music that was not considered a separate genre at the time. It is thought to have influenced the punk rock movement in the 1970s as punk rock shared the same stylistic components and song structures, hence the name proto-punk. quite simple actually.

i believe this is the genre that touched me the most by far. music still has a harmony, it's not too complicated to listen, often very relaxing and also extremely artistic (patti smith especially). i like this style because it symbolizes the freedom in the world of music, or at least i feel like it. proto-punk was awesome, what came out of it was really great, but today it almost lost sense it had, the message, the artistry, and became something that everyone could do - no-rule chaos. and it's sad that people today say that that's exactly what punk is.
