"break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored" was written by Ariana Grande and Savan Kotecha alongside its producers Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh, with Ariana serving as a vocal producer. It contains an interpolation of *NSYNC's "It Makes Me Ill", written by Kandi Burruss and Kevin Briggs.
The track was released by Republic Records as the third and final single from thank u, next on February 8, 2019. Its music video, directed by Hannah Lux Davis, accompanied its release the same day. The song reached #1 in Greece, Ireland, New Zealand, Slovakia and the United Kingdom.
