Same here, rickysbutler. Always liked them, never been a huge fan. Had this album lying around for quite a while before finally giving it the first spin - and it blew me away. Really enjoying it, especially "How to live" and "Feud", Sorry to see so many fans being diappointed.

One of those few moments where I just don't understand the overwhelmingly strong opinion to an album that opposes my own almost completely. With no prior knowledge of this album or its reception, having not listened to Band of Horses in years (&, while liking them, I never considered myself much of a fan), I popped on my headphones for an early 6 a.m. hike into the mountains of SoCal not so many months ago and played this little guy. Absolutely magical; a new-found adoration for BOH as the sun rose and started reaching through those high trees, as the temperature warmed.... Basically I bobbed the hell out of my head and felt good, refreshed about everything for however many minutes. It was, oddly, a perfect series of moments in a mostly-perfect day. Put this on--loud--and take an early morning hike.

My initial reaction to Mirage Rock was much like everyone else's below. After a few listens, it started to grow on me and now it's the album I listen to most. The melodies take a little longer to stick but once they do, that's it. I don't find it lacking emotion or anything. I think the flat production is really blocking out an otherwise great album.

Just a few traces of Band of Horses. Not a bad album overall, but not a Band of Horses album. That being said, Heartbreak On The 101 is great.

So I'm not the only one who's disappointed after the first listening to the album... Honestly, my only impression is: what the fuck and why?

I find this new record mediocre & lacks soul unlike their previous albums. The first half of this album is weak but quickly regains its stance after the second half.

Quite love the new album a lot! I love the soft-folk sound. Yes, it might be a bit of a grower for some BoH fans, But I am enjoying it very much! So beautiful.

On first listen I'd say the production is its biggest problem. The "heavier" songs seem to lack edge and the rootsy Americana ballads meander. There's a few nice moments on here, but overall I'm clamouring for that 'soul' that was prevalent in the first two records. It's not like I'm against them experimenting; I loved when MMJ jumped to a more expansive, 'arena' sound with 'Z' and 'Evil Urges', but this is dull. 'Heartbreak on the 101' is, as others have said, the early standout. Maybe bringing back the reverb would help...

Hmmm, rather underwhelming on first listen. Hopefully it'll be a 'grower'', time will tell...
