Recorded between 1998 a year after the release of their sophomore album Kill the Lights; The Going Away Present was released on April 27th, 1999. As Lowercase's third and final album before disbanding a year later. The Going Away Present would be released under the label, "Punk in My Vitamins". Which is most notably owned by Vern Rumsey from the band Unwound. Unwound and Lowercase as a whole have toured along together at some point in time and Vern himself would be seen wearing some of Lowercase's merch on some of the photos presses with Unwound. The Going Away Present is sonically different compared to it's post-hardcore counterparts like Kill the Lights and All Destructive Urges, as it takes on a more slowcore and post-punk approach to music. Standing out from it's contemporaries from the post-hardcore scene of the late 90's like Unwound and Karp at the time.

The Going Away Present and Lowercase as a whole would grow a cult-following later on in the years. Reviews at the time like Stanford Daily, wrote about this album at the time and said, "If you love Slint's "Spiderland" but have always been frustrated by the armies of bands claiming to be "influenced by Slint," you should buy "the going away present," if only to experience this brooding soundscape.". Jack Rabid, a self-proclaimed, "godfather of punk rock" would also write a review on AllMusic about this album. Calling it, "Brooding", "Creepy mood rock", and, "Excellent".

The final track on this album, Thistrainwillnotstop, has a secret slowcore track on it. This track would also be released on a 7' vinyl the same year called Imbedded In Ice.
