Damn fine EP. Every track a winner, with a really pleasing mix that allows each element to shine. I really like the rubbery bass and skittering drums on the upbeat closer "Stumble." Definitely the most overtly Post-Punk sounding record they ever did, while also sounding noticeably different to anything that had preceded it, or that was being done concurrently. Very easy to see why these guys resonated so strongly with so many people early on, and became a key group in the development of Alt- and Indie-Rock.

They never were the same after I.R.S. were they? Loved the Succumbs tape, played the hell out of it between 1987 and whenever my last VCR broke. Like most, I only discovered the band around Life's Rich Pageant (in my defense, I was only 14), but their indie stuff is easily their best. I still adore Out of Time, Automatic, etc, but their early work is its own thing entirely.

for christmas in 1982, my favorite uncle from athens gave me "chronic town". it started a life-long obsession with new bands and non-commercial music. but when they released "document", i learned that the smiths had disbanded and i was gutted to lose both of my favorite bands.
