Biography
KALEIDONAUTS began as a transatlantic collaboration project between Smally (The Wheelies) and Jon of the Atom (Dead Canaries) both featured on Cozy Home Records. First record "I Do Not Currently Own A Spaniard (Mine Died)" is a lo-fi psychedelic-folk-pop record, made between January 2007 and January 2008. Smally wrote the songs and Jon produced it, playing most of the instruments and recruiting artists like Jane Gilmore (vox) Katie Saul (vox), Warchalking (vox/guitar), Tim Kotch (trumpet), and Meghan Geiss (rhythm). It was released in April 2008 through Quixodelic Records.
During the summer of 2008, Smally, Warchalking, and Jane Gilmore made a follow-up Kaleidonauts record called "Tigermouse", trading files across the Atlantic. Songs were co-written and played by Smally and Warchalking, with Jane adding vocals. Less psychedelic and more folk-pop, the record was also released as a free download through Quixodelic Record in September 2008.
A third Kaleidonauts album called "K2" featuring cut songs and alternative takes from the first two records may or may not exist.
Although it is unlikely that any further Kaleidonauts records will be made, Smally continues to help Jon with Dead Canaries, and both Smally and Warchalking continue to collaborate on the writing/recording project called The Utica Flower Company.
