Biography

Lee Sankey was born in London, England in 1970. Principally known for his harmonica playing, he is also a, songwriter and guitarist. His band, The Lee Sankey Group, which toured all over Europe up until 2004, featured a core five piece band with the addition of a three or five piece horn section.

Stylistically Lee’s music is a blend of jazz, roots and funk elements mixed with blues ideals. He coined the phrase “Bluebop” in 1997 as a descriptive term for the music on his debut "My Day Is Just Beginning ". Influences range from Muddy Waters, BB King, Little Walter to Canonball Adderley, Charles Mingus to Tom Waits.

Following his debut album in 1999 Lee made the “She's Note Alone ” Ep in 2000. “Tell Me There's A Sun ” his 2003 album featured 17 musicians and a guest appearance by the late Chris Whitley. In 2004 Lee embarked on a remix project of some of his work collaborating with artists such as Tipper. A short run of 1000 white label 10 inch records were released with remixes of “He Doesn’t Live Like The Others” by Tipper and “The Man” by Abstrakt Knights.

Lee also has a passion for design. In addition to designing all his own album artwork he designed the cover for the Spikedrivers CD ‘Delta roots. He also produced concept designs for footwear and accessories in the late 80’s early 90’s and was one of the first industrial designers to introduce automotive influences to footwear design.
