"If You Wear That Velvet Dress" is the tenth track on U2's 1997 album Pop. It is a slow ballad with a lot of mellow, ambient atmospherics. The track came out of the, circa 1995, pre-production sessions with Nellee Hooper; although because Hooper left the sessions because of a prior commitment to the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack before the album sessions properly started (he is only given a mention in the thanks section in the liner booklet of the album), production of the track was primarily done by Marius de Vries.
De Vries played keyboards on this track, contributing to the ambient feel. Mullen uses brush stroke style drums for the most part. Bono reworked this song as a lounge-jazz piece with Jools Holland for Hollands 2002 album "Small World Big Band Volume Two".
