Biography
Ever since she was a little girl Angela knew one thing for sure: she wanted to be singer. Her mother was a singer in a popular soul band and that influenced Angela a great deal. Listening to her mothers albums of vocalists like Donny Hathaway, Minni Ripperton, Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle and Whitney Houston Angela knew she wanted to become a singer as well.
At the age of fifteen Angela started partaking in talent shows and joined the girl group Dope Inspiration. The group performed in the popular Escape Venue and even was the opening show for the American group Silk. A few years later things got really serious when Angela auditioned at the well known Cruise Control Studios, breeding place for successful Dutch R&B groups like Dignity, Re-play and Sat-R-Day.
After a successful auditioning Angela participated in Solid, a R&B girl group. Solid was a well known name in the Dutch R&B scene in the mid 90s and was part of the Dutch R&B album No Sweat. A popular compilation of several R&B-groups. A No Sweat tour through Holland followed with the song Down with you by producers Mike & Roni (Soulplanet studio).
That is when Koos van Dijk, manager of the late and famous Dutch rock legend Herman Brood, saw Angela and Solid-colleague Wendy perform. He was so impressed that he asked them to join Herman Brood and band The Wild Romance for the project Herman Brood With soul. Solid performed at Herman Broods birthday at the Paradiso and did a tour through Germany with Herman Brood.
Solid also did shows with background dancers all over Holland and Germany and won the national music contest Most Wanted in 1999. After that they performed at the important Dutch talent show De Grote Prijs van Nederland. By then Angela decided to take a break from Solid to focus on her education. She was still determined to pursue a career as a singer, but she also believes that a mind is a terrible thing to waste.
Angela ran in to producer J. Arts from Silent City Productions in 2001. She once auditioned in his studio and he hadnt forgotten about her. So they made an appointment to get together. That was the start of Angies solo career.
Angela decided to take on different projects and work with several producers to develop different styles. Angela started singing in an R&B cover band named Dice XP. She performed gospel with the American singer Michelle David and the Sounds of Faith. She did background vocals for Big Boy Caprices band and did gigs with the hip hop-jazz band Illicit. She performed with a popular cover band called Brick house. And Angela even went African style with the Band Tribal Countdown.
Angelas main influences nowadays are Stevie Wonder, En Vogue, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu. She has been told that her sound is a blend of nu soul artists like Sade, Erykah Badu and India.Arie. But after all her experiences as a vocalist Angie discovered her music style varies between jazz, nu-soul, pop and R&B.
Currently Angela is working on her own music with producer/guitarist Alvin Lewis who has worked with Hollands best selling rapper Brainpower and the hot Dutch-Brazilian band Zuco 103.
Angela studies at the Lion King school from Joop van den Ende productions.
Recently Angela did a duet with Imro-Select and featured on his single Bugging me. The video can be seen on The Box and TMF since March 2004.
All this shows that Angela is a very busy and ambitious young woman. And although she already is a well known face in the Amsterdam soul and R&B-scene, Angela intends to show the rest of the world much more of her singing skills.
